Vienna? Prague? Copenhagen? Stockholm? Berlin?

I am trying to combine a trip to these cities and i have to pick 2. I am using FF miles so the combos have to work easily with the Star Alliance (United, SAS, Lufthansa, Austrian). Which two would make the best pair? (Hint - I have always wanted to go to Prague). Help!

Haven't you really answered your own question by stating your interest in Prague? It seems you might want to fly into Prague and then open-jaw out of another city like Vienna, Milan, Zurich, Berlin. Just depends on what you want to do and what FF flights you can get. Given the cities you named, I would probably opt to fly into Vienna, stay there a few days, go to Prague, stay there a few days, and then travel to Berlin, from which I would return to the US. Obviously, given the time, you could continue that sojourn farther west and north to Copenhagen and even Stockholm for your open-jaw return, depending on your time and your interest.

Richard, since you want to go to Prague, I will suggest that you go to Prague for the whole 6 days. From Prague, you could do an overnight to Cesky Krumlov, or even a day trip there. You can do 1/2 day trips to Kutna Hora and Terezin, or even full day trips within the Czech Republic. You'll need at least 4 days for Prague though. Just another thought, if you only want to go to Prague and then another city, you might consider Dresden which is 3 hours by train from Prague. I think Vienna is approximately 5 hours by train from Prague, but don't quote me on the hours.

Richard: Leslie makes a good point. You could easily fashion a very enjoyable six days in the Czek Republic. To the list that Leslie provides, I would add Telc and Trebon. Be sure to do an overnight to Cesky Kumlov. The atmosphere at evening and morning are awesome. Good luck.

Terezin is the site of the ghetto and fortress used in WWII that was in the propaganda movie that the Nazis made for the Red Cross to show that there were no concentration camps. You may know of Terezin as Theresenstadt.

Kutna Hora is famous for its silver mines and the minting of the first money of Czechoslavakia. You can visit the mint, the St. Barbara Cathedral (she is the saint of miners), and the Sedlec Ossuary, known as the bone church. All of the decor in the church is done with skeletons. Besides those 3 sites in Kutna Hora, its just a nice little town.

Cesky Krumlov is another nice village, and has the second largest castle in the Czech Republic. If you don't want to spend the whole day in Cesky Krumlov, you could also go to Cesky Budjevoce, where the original Budweiser was brewed -- now known as Budvar. Also, that town has the second largest public square in Europe, the first being Red Square in Moscow. There is also another castle nearby (pure white), but the name escapes me.

You might also consider going to one of the spa towns in the Czech Republic and experience the thermal baths.

Hi Richard -

I totally agree with Leslie... we got back from Prague about a week before she just got back from Budapest... loved it!

On this trip we had 4 days in Salzburg, 3 days in Budapest, 2 days in Prague We REALLY felt that we shorted Prague!) and 3 in Vienna.... We could have EASILY spent 6 days in any of these cities individually!

We were in Copenhagen (2 days) and Stockholm (3 days) in July as part of a 3 week Baltic swing.... 3 days in each of these cities would be sufficient and make a nice trip... soooo... it just depends on which direction you want to head! They are all good choices gt;)

Have a good trip whichever way you go!

Barry

(p.s. - If you choose Prague, we stayed at the K + K Fenix ... excellant location just off "Wenceslas Square" in walking distance from everywhere. Great breakfasts and they prepared us a wonderful private dinner with wine and even made a special strudel just for us... the whole 9 yards for under $50.00 US!)

I am still searching.... Don't confuse my little head. I can only do two cities. Right now I am leaning towards Vienna/Prague or Copenhagen/Prague, but that can change in a minute. What about Zurich?

Richard, forget Zurich, you'll be bored after a day and a half. Zurich is really a financial center and a hub for an airport to other cities within Europe. In Zurich there are a few churches (one with Marc Chagall's stained glass windows -- they are gorgeous), a shopping area remindful of Fifth Avenue with all the fashionable stores, a couple of museums, and a cruise on the lake. It's all good, but it's also worth skipping. Hotels in Zurich are extremely expensive. However, if you do want to go to Zurich, then only stay a day, and take the train to Lucerne (about an hour), which is a wonderful city to see and stay there. The war memorial will bring tears to your eyes, there are plenty of museums, its very scenic, and there is always Mt. Pilatus.

I have had friends go to Copenhagen, and they said it was very expensive -- especially lodging. I seem to recall its only worth a couple of days being there, but if you do go, you must go to Tivoli Gardens.

My vote for you would be Prague/Vienna or Prague/Dresden.

That is a tough one! I love Berlin, Vienna and Prague. Berlin is the history of the 20th century (Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Reichstag, Olympic Stadium, Potsdam, Unter der Linden, Templehof Airfield, etc), has a great nightlife, culture (art museums, opera, symphony), nice people and great food and drink. Vienna is a cultural center and having a torte and coffee at Demel's or a weinerschnitzel as big as your plate at Figlmullers. The Opera House, ferris wheel, horses, coffee houses, wine cafes, museums, palaces are all great in Wein. I stayed with friends in Berlin but found a great Hotel Pension--Arenberg- within the Ring and part of Best Western, but with posh Vienna feel. In Prague we stayed at Penzion Balbin which we got through the www.avetravel.cz web site. You can find hotels/pensions for all 3 cities at nethotels.com

Hmmmm, those are some good ideas. Let me tell you what cities I like and what cities I loved and maybe that will help.

Cities I love (n order) --

Rome - amazing, fast, friendly, sexy, delicious, historic, espresso
Munich - clean, scenic, modern, old, pork, beer, shopping, pretzels
Paris - beauty, convenience, monuments, museums, FOOD!, WINE!, style, cafe creme, attitude
Amsterdam - quaint, pretty, shopping, cafes, canals, trams, cobblestones, pastry
strasbourg - cathedral, food, wine, beer, friendly, pretty

Cities that are just OK (to me) --

London - never changes, royalty, museums, tea, punk, trend
Venice - beautiful, different, expensive, canals, pastry
Madrid - tapas, wine, ham, cheese, lunch, shopping, cafe con leche

Cities I don't care for (sorry) --

Florence - touristy, crowded, expensive
Brussels - zzzzzzz
Dusselfdorf - shopping, food, double zzzzzzz
Edinburgh - dreary, dark, grey
Salzburg - small, touristy
Cardiff - why did I go there?

Does that help?
