Vienna, Prague, and Beyreuth
We will be attending a festival in Beyreuth in August. We would also like to go to Vienna
and Prague. Any ideas on where to fly into (from Kennedy) and how to arrange the logistics of this "triangular" trip.

If you fly into Frankfurt you could reach it by rail but that would take between 3-4 hours; about 2 hours or so from Munich; if you could make a connection by air to Nurnberg that would be even better. A lot depends on how you are planning to get around (rental car?) and I suggest you do a little research and start by looking at a map.

Prague is probably your best host city.
However, trains from Prague to Germany are limited. The good news is that there are a plethora of buses running to Nuremburg. From there you can take a train. I hired a private car to take me to a small town in Germany. The driver was very knowledgable.

I just came back from Prague, and there are a lot of 4**** hotels around 100 E a night.
A train from Prague to Vienna is about 5 hours.

If your destinations are really these three, it is not that difficult to identify options.
1. Objectives: Priority list of what you want to do at each destination. The list helps you identify what must be worked in and what can be left out to improve itinerary by relaxing time constraints, cost, moving days to another city, etc.
2. Destination constraints: Which days and time the attractions are open. You have to look at each web site. Mondays are usually bad for museums and Sundays are bad for shopping. On top of this, many places have last minutes closures, renovations, special exhibits, etc. requiring planning different from what you find in not so up-to-date guidebooks.
3. Connections: How do you connect destinations? If car, use www.viamichelin.com, or maps.google.com. If by train, use www.bahn.com which also include bus into Prague from Germany. Be aware that not all rental company allows cars rented in Germany to be brought into Czech Republic. Additionally, one-way rental done between different countries incur hefty drop-off charges.
4. Accommodations: Are there places to stay in your target neighborhood within your constraints? You do not want unknowingly end up having to make an accommodation booking in a city with major events driving up prices. Hotel rooms often come with different rate depending on the day of the week. Even staying at exactly same room type at exactly same hotels, depending on which day of the week you end up, your cost might come out different.
5. Flights (which is really your question, but since it is so inflexible, you must have done previous steps to make sure your flight matches your constraints.) This itinerary probably calls for multi-city of some kind. But, to find out just which two cities you use, you need to run through trial booking to see what would work out. You will probably end up with multiple airport combinations you can use that match your other constraints. Use fare alert to get feeling of where the fares are going. You cannot usually to multi-city fare alert, but the price movement is somewhat related to what roundtrip fares to arriving and departing airports do. Flights requiring short layovers at large airports requiring terminal building changes have greater chances of fouling up your itinerary if you miss your connections. Before clicking that “buy” button, make sure the flight connections make sense. If the flight home is insanely early, you need to stay overnight at or near the departing city.
