It would probably depend on what the concert program was and the performers for me to decide, but given that choice I can tell you I'd definitely choose Johnny spielt auf, then Zaide, then a concert, and lastly Der Bettelstudent.

This is just personal preference, though, but I really dislike operettas so would not want to go to Der Bettelstudent. I adore Mozart so would put Zaide second, even though that wasn't one of his most wellknown, bad Mozart is superior to a lot of things -- that opera wasn't finished, so at least won't be as long as some of them (like Marriage of Figaro--love the music but it's really long).

Johnny spielt auf, however, is one of the premier works in early 20th century modern jazz opera, I'd love to see it. They have Ozawa as conductor now, I believe, and I like him also.

If you are not afficionados and want a truly enjoyable experience go to Der Bettelstudent. We have been to two different offerings at the Volksoper and have always found them fun and memorable. You will love the music in this operetta, it will give you tunes to hum and remember for a long time to come. Treat yourself to an apertif at the Volksoper cafe afterwards.
Above all, it is an operetta from a truly great Viennese period. Don't let the snobs talk you into something boring like Zaide or Jonny speilt. Truly, Der Bettelstudent is an experience not to be missed.

I gather you are calling me a "snob" operaman, since I'm the only one who replied. My personal musical preferences have nothing to do with being a "snob" and I resent your name-calling. I don't care for the same kind of music you do, but I wouldn't feel any need to call you some name because we have different tastes.

My dislike for operettas has nothing to do with being a "snob" whatever that means. I simply dislike that genre of music, always have, always will. I have studied classical music for years and even played it professionally so I don't think it has anything to do with being a "snob".

Why do you feel it necessary to imply that yours is the only correct opinion and that someone who does not like light viennese operattas must be a "snob"?

I prefer Mozart Symphonies to almost anything. Having said that, I wish to thank both Operaman and especially Christina for their contributions to this site.

Not implying anything of the kind about you. I sing in many operas from Mozart to Lehar. As the original poster said he was not a real afficionado I recommended what I felt would be a good choice for a novice and would be an excellent reflection of a classic Viennese period.
