Vienna Hotel choice?: Am Stephansplatz or Konig van Ungarn? or???

Would love anyone's preference of either of these hotels who know them currently
the "ambiance" factor overall? quality of breakfast?
strength of wifi, as we have to reach our work (sadly) while on vacation...
ANy construction nearby? overall sleep factor?
We have similar rates quoted for a double superior room
Or any hotel you particularly love: our budget is max 225/night for a couple
Our first time in Vienna! early September, so we have plenty of time..
thank you!!

We loved last year the Altstadt Hotel. For September it is showing about 225 USD/night. Beautiful decor (old townhouse but modern art on walls), great breakfast and tea, very helpful English speaking staff and near enough to walk everywhere although not right in the center.

Nearby is the Spittelberg area with small little cobblestone streets and many cute restaurants and pubs. http://www.wien.info/en/shopping-win...-wining-dining

I reserved through www.slh.com and joined the slh "club" and got breakfast included.

One of our favorites anywhere.

Only one caution, the lobby is on the second floor and then the rooms are on that floor or one or two higher. There must have been an elevator but we always used stairs. If that makes a difference to you be sure and check the hotel website about whether an elevator or not.

Other highlights in Vienna - all the places you can see Klimpt (including the Beethoven frieze), the Musikverein (music museum - very modern museum features) and a concert at the Vienna Philharmonic.

Enjoy planning your trip!

I have not stayed at the Am Stephensplatz since it was completely rennovated--the location is excellent, right across from the cathedral.

The Konig von Ungarn is my favorite hotel in Vienna, excellent service, breakfast, restaurant, lobby bar. Very quiet. I can't remember about the wifi quality, was not working on that trip.

Agree with Cathinjoetown. On one of our trips to Vienna we stayed in the www.kvu.at/en/ and loved the hotel.

Location is excellent as it is just behind the cathedral wih no noise.

Never stayed at the other hotel you asked about.

You've made a good choice. KVU is so Vienna! Nothing better than to return from a day of sightseeing/shopping/whatever and sink down into one of those wingbacked chairs, order a drink and relax in the atrium bar, complete with real trees. Love it.

After posting the above reply, I recalled that we had indeed stayed also at Am Stephansplatz one year when we were not able to get rooms at KVU and went on a website to compare recent pictures of the two. While we were happy at Am Stephensplatz (really nice breakfast room), there's no comparison between the two hotels really. AS is a modern hotel that, aside from the location and view of Stephensdom, could be anywhere. KVU is completely Vienna and unique to that city even without the view of the church. And their breakfasts are wonderful as is the restaurant where they serve them. It's of a piece with the city. Enjoy.

Another vote for the KVU. We've stayed at several central places in Vienna and have made KVA our favorite by far. You can't beat the quiet location on Schulerstrasse directly behind the left side of the Cathedral. Take note of the historic sign on the facade of the attached building to the right of the KVA indicating that Mozart lived for a time in an apartment there and while there he wrote 'The Marriage of Figaro'. Entrance to the apartment and associated museum is around the block on Domgasse.

Within a couple of minutes walk from KVA or Stephandom you'll also find http://www.figlmueller.at/en/figlmue...lzeile-en.html. Figlmueller's is a small restaurant which, since 1905 has served what is regarded as the best Wiener Schnitzel to be found anywhere. There are two locations quite close to one another but the one you should go for is their cozy small original location on/in Wollzeile. a short pedestrian lane or alley just a minute or so from the KVA or Stephandom. There's usually a wait time but moves along pretty quickly and is well worth the wait for the experience. Reservations are suggested but not necessary.
