vienna - apartment hotel
We're spending the final 2 nights of our trip in Vienna (myself, husband and adult son) and I'd prefer not to have the three of us in one room - and of course I'd prefer not to have to book 2 rooms! Can anyone suggest a centrally located hotel that offers seperate bedroom/living room accomodation?

We stayed at the Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth with our two teens this past June. It was highly recommended by others on Fodors Travel Talk, and I, too, wholeheartedly recommend it. The Kaiserin Elisabeth has rooms, I think called "deluxe double" or something like that. Our room was very large, with a room divider down the middle to separate the living and sleeping areas. It had a nice wardrobe type affair in the sleeping room, with lots of space to hang and store things. The room offered a fair amount of privacy, without having the luxury of two distinct rooms. We had two additional beds in the living space, which still left room for two chairs and a small table. Then the bedroom side had a small vanity, also. It is a fabulous, spotlessly kept boutique-type hotel located in the center of old Vienna, right by the Stephansdom and a U-Bahn stop. From the hotel, you can walk all over town. The Hotel also has a nice breakfast buffet, and will even prepare hot eggs for you if you ask nicely! I think it was about $280/night for the four of us in the one room. It also had a mini-bar in the room. I belive their e-mail address is [email protected]

I booked my mum into Starlight Suites (www.starlighthotels.com) on Renngasse (there are two other locations which are on busier streets) as best value in town (direct contact with reception for big discount). Was I think 100euro incl breakfast. Accommodation is good quality with small kitchenette and big lounge. When I first moved to Vienna I stayed at Singerstrasse apartments - also quite good and very central. I cannot recall web site, but a search should find it.
Having seen Pension Suzanne rooms I am stunned by continued references to it. I think it is a dump, whether it is good service or not. Location is central but on a busy street. Kaiserin Elizabeth is a nice hotel with good location.

Try the Sacher Apartments, on Stephansdom Square...a most convenient (though at times a little noisy) location with a view of the cathedral. Be sure and get good directions as you must enter through an entrance that looks nothing like a hotel lobby. It is very reasonable...we had a kitchen, bathroom, large living room/where 2 beds were set up for our girls and a huge bedroom for my husband and I. Note: the helpful hotel staff are on duty only in the day time...I've given you the pros and cons, but I think you should take a look. It's a lot of space for central Vienna at a great price...

If you can get a double and single for the same price as a suite/apartment, why not? For one thing, you'd get two bathrooms instead of one. At many hotels, you could easily get adjoining rooms if you feel the need to be next to each other.

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I'm happy to look at the option of 2 rooms - but just wanted some alternatives as well. We're not in Vienna until early January after a month in an apartment in Italy - so I'll also check out the Sacher apartments.

Not their web site, but at least it gives you an address and phone number.

I also endorse starlight suites on Renngasse: central, modern, simple, immaculate, with okay guests -- mostly business or older travellers and dignified gay couples of both genders. A long distance call from our room to Budapest, to locate a left-behind wallet, cost about 50 US cents -- you could have knocked me over with a feather.
