My 19-year old nephew has been living in London for some weeks, and is booked on the train to Edinburgh at 7am tomorrow, returning Sunday evening. Yes, it's a ridiculously short amount of time. He's an experienced traveler, he says he will book a place to stay when he arrives. Any suggestions for seeing some highlights in Edinburgh would be appreciated, and a suggestion for a centrally-located hotel or B&B, single room with a private bath, for 100-150 pounds would be useful. He is a history buff. Also, he very much wants to visit Rosslyn Chapel--how to do by public transport. (Yes, THAT'S why he wants to see it, don't get me started...).

I hope the experience is worthwhile. I enjoyed it last summer and came home with a very good DVD.

But, as the guide said, "Folks, it ain't a movie set." The success of the da Vinci Code has been as much a blessing as it has been a curse.

The fiction of the book is being construed too much as fact! And the chapel is not set up for hoards of tour buses. Unfortunately that is the reality of the situation.

found some posted links to bus lines, but I'm afraid I couldn't make head nor tail out of the bus line websites.

With regard to a central hotel there are quite a few and you may be able to obtain favourable Late Availability rates. These include the Radisson in the High Street / Royal Mile, Ibis in Hunter Square, Apex in the Grassmarket, Jurys in Jeffrey Street, the Travel Lodge in St Marys Street.
Central B & Bs are slightly harder to find but you could try the Castle View Guest House, Castle Street.
I would think that with such a short time in Edinburgh you could either book tonight or ascertain availability tonight and thius could save losing valuable time tramping round hotels etc.
If you are staying in accommodation in the city centre then this will enable you to explore the city centre at anytime and you can look down the closes and wynds off the Royal Mile to see some of the historical buildings etc. Have a look at www.royalmile.com for some suggestions as to places to visit.

With regard to Roslin (Rosslyn) Chapel the number 15 Lothian Bus http://lothianbuses.com/r15.php travels from Princes Street to Roslin and stops at the Hotel. The journey is about 35- 40 minutes. Roslin Chapel is a short walk from the Hotel..

Tell him not to worry about printing out bus schedules, logistics and such. He will arrive at Waverly station and there is a large, well-staffed Tourist Information Office right outside they station. They will have all the info he needs and can direct him to the nearest bust stop for Roslin, his hotel or where ever. They will be able to provide any information he needs.
