My husband and I are going to Italy for 2 weeks in May to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We are planning on staying in Vernazza for 2 nights at the end of our trip. I'm having a hard time deciding on a place to stay in Vernazza. I'm a light sleeper so want a quiet room. We also want to stay somewhere with a terrace where we can take our bottle of wine and watch the sunset. A bathroom in the room is also a must. La Mala' is beautiful and I'm tempted, but would prefer spending less. I'd love some suggestions. I was thinking possibly Gianni Franzi, but read about it being noisy.
Vernazza- Trattoria Gianni Franzi, La Mala' or Elisabetta Carro

I haven't seen the other 2 properties, but my wife and I were very happy with La Mala (Room 31). There is a common terrace for the 4 rooms which is at window level of Room 26--Room 31 is one floor above. You won't be confronted with heavily-draped windows and mismatched furniture found in many B&B's...La Mala's decor is crisp, white, and clean...almost Scandinavian in feel. We are in our mid-50's, and would stay at La Mala again in a heartbeat!
Without a doubt, La Mala. The others are no more than the typical "rooms for rent" throughout Le Cinque Terre (and yes, bad draperies and bathrooms that need to be refurbished!). It's a special occasion and therefor worth spending a bit extra for something special.
stay away from anywhere with free sight to harbor piazza. we liked Camere Giuliano, uptown, quiet, terrace, but possibly not with the comfort you wish for. Private bath. Small, 4 rooms of different size.
I am also planning to visit Vernazza. I want to book La Mala, but am concerned with the numerous steps since I am travelling with my 65-year old mother. She is not frail but of course will tire easily now so I am worried we might regret our decision staying here. Should we still book at La Mala?
They offered us their alternative apartment near the piazza so that there won't be any steps - are you familiar with this?
Another vote for La Mala. A 25th Anniversary deserves a splurge. We stayed there for a very short 3 nights on our 10 year Anniversary. VERY romantic, clean, stylish, artfully appointed and worth every cent. We loved our room #26 with the extra room below with stone wall window right out on the sea. Yes, it is 83 steps to the top, but is so quiet. The shared stone terrace right on the sea was a welcome to us every night where we shared CT's very own white wine and the sunset.
I posted pics and a (2007) review on La Mala at tripadvisor.com. Don't be disappointed, Book now...they fill up fast!
daisy88....just returned 2 days ago from the Armanda apt (6 nights) that La Mala offers right on the Piazza. ONLY 14 steps, comfy and fabulous. VERY quiet (surprisingly...but it was late October). The windows shut airtight and are double glazed. Open them in the morning like we did and shout a very hearty, "Buon giorno Vernazza"!
Buon viaggo and happy 25th!
