rosanne, I was in the same situation. Looking for a place to stay for 3 or perhaps 4 of us (older daughter will already be in Venice studying, but may want to crash with mom, dad & sis instead of sharing a room with classmates while we are there.)
I finally decided that an apartment was the way to go. Many, many apartments rent for 3 night minimums. Here's the link to the one we picked, but there are tons.

Happy hunting!

La Calcina is a lovely 3-star on a shipping canal only about 10 min away from Piazza San Marco. The hotel has reasonably priced rooms, but it also rents some nearby apartments. If you're interested, I'd e-mail them right away. The hotel is very popular!

Venice is my teenage son's favorite place. His most favorite thing to do is to walk by himself. I give him a map, show him where we are and where the major sites are like the Rialto or San Marco so he can find his way back.
