Venice with ease?
Since I have some physical limitations, not the least of which is old age, I'd like to get from the Venice Airport to a Venice hotel as simply as possible. Can someone recommend a reasonably priced hotel that is particularly easy to reach (such as one where a boat might stop directly). I have not been to Venice before and know next to nothing about it.

Eventually, Richard, you will need to have water transport. I saw some very good and cheap hotels, however, on the MAINLAND. Venice has a hotel website, just enter Venice under Altavista and you will get tons of data. However I would shy away from a land location because I wouldn't want to be taking the vaparetto all the time. However I understand about having a limited budget, so this would be your best bet!

Richard, Venice is pretty expensive, what would you consider reasonably priced? There are some hotels that have docks that you can take a water taxi directly to but the water taxi will run $50-$60 as compared to the vaparetto from the airport which is around $8. The vaparetto is just a boat that functions as public transportation and has standard stops. If you take it you will be responsible for getting your own luggage to your hotel. Give us a little more info on what you would like to pay, it would be a shame to miss venice.

Richard, The private limo [ water taxi] will take you to any hotel on the water for about $80. The ALILAGUNA water bus will cost you about $10 and drop you at the San Marco vaporetto stop--takes about 1:10. From here, you can walk to any one of a dozen hotels within 5 minutes. Price would dictate which.
Some of the 5 star hotels will send their private launch for you. It all depends on $$$.

Richard lots of us can recommend reasonably priced hotels & if they're not right on a canal, many will be near one. Tell us what price you're thinking about. But given your question, just realize there's a lot of walking & steps in Venice. Here are a few options to think about:
Hotel Ala is "reasonably" priced and on the Grand Canal near San Marco Square & the Alilugana (waterbus) stop from the airport
Hotel Calcina is not in the center of things for sightseeing (therefore quieter) but right at the Zattere Aliluguna stop so also convenient to come & go.
www.venere.com is a good website for hotels
You don't want to stay on Lido or Mestre.

We've been to Venice 5 or 6 times and always took "public" transportation, schlepped our bags around, etc. Last trip in Oct. we decided to blow it and traveled to and from our hotel (Metropole) by water taxi. (You step right into the hotel lobby from the taxi). It was great fun, but getting in and out of those bobbing boats is not the easiest thing to do if you have
physical limitations. If you take the vaporetto you could have a porter take your luggage to your hotel. ($10.00 ??)
The exit from the bigger boats is a lot more stable. Otherwise, unless you have problems with steps, Venice is easy. (PS.. We are 65 and 76)

The last time we visited Venice, we used the water taxi from the airport. But we found out you can have up to 6 people for one price (I think it was 6), so we got two other couples to join us and we shared for $70 right to our hotel--there was a slight additional charge for each of the other couples to get them to their nearby hotels, so it came to about $15 a person. A couple of the folks were not very nimble, but the taxi driver and the hotel staff helped them with no problems.

Richard, skip the trouble of finding and boarding boats, etc. Take the extremely convenient bus to Pt. Roma or whatever the Venice bus station is called. It's across the canal from the train station, but a nicer neighborhood. Pointless to give you a hotel name, since it normally takes about a dozen tries before finding one not booked up.

Richard,
The Alilaguna boat is the easiest/most economical way to get to San Marco vaparetto bus stop. Well, actually the one stop just past it, after a very short walk, will take you to the Violina D'Oro Hotel. You have to walk over one bridge and you are there in San Moise "square". The hotel is very nice and it has an elevator to get you to your room. Of course, the price depends on the season. Check it out.

Oh, I forgot, though, you will not be getting your first glimpse of the Grand Canal if you do it this way. We took a bus from the Airport to the Parking area near the Train Station and got onto a Vaparetto boat that took us down the Grand Canal for a most spectacular first sight of the "Great Steet"!!!

My sincere thanks to each of you for your help. I should have stated that a "reasonable price" for this trip would be under $200 per night. Or is that "unreasonable" in Venice? (I'll be staying for quite some time in Europe, so this is a bit of a side trip.)
Again, thanks very much.
Richard

Richard, if I were you I would stay pretty central in Venice (like Piazza San Marco). You don't want to have to walk a long while to get to the sights that you want to see. Your trip from the airport to your hotel will be maybe an hour tops. The majority of your time will be spent actually in Venice, and you really should focus on accessibility when you are there.
Venice is very expensive and the old adage you get what you pay for rings especially true there.
Please know that their are TONS of stairs in Venice that bring you over the many canals. Do not know your specific limitations, but Venice is by no means handicapped accessible.
Good luck.

Richard- $200 a night is not unreasonable. In May that would be a 2-3* hotel I think. Now decide which mode of transport from the airport you want- 1)private taxi -you can stay anywhere (preferably on a canal), 2)Alilugana -stay San Marco or Zattere 3) bus etc.
