This is a variation on an earlier posting which I failed to have directed to the Slovenia section.
Has anybody had experience in traveling from Venice to Kobarid, Slovenia (formerly Caporetto, Italy) and back in a day? This is the setting of the famous retreat from Caporetto depicted in Hemingway's A FAREWELL TO ARMS, and I would like to see it. There are frequent trains from Venice to both Gorizia and Udine, but how to get from either of those cities to Kobarid and back. Any ideas?

We spent 3 weeks in Croatia and Slovenia last fall.
During that time we did a day's drive from Bled into the Julian Alps during which we drove through Kobarid. We have also driven out of Venice (though north to the Alps)so I think I can say with absolute certainty that there is no way you could drive from Venice to Kobarid for the day. You would have to have a car to get to Kobarid from any train station (it is a very small town) and the roads in the Kobarid area are typical Alpine roads, windy and slow going. We ran out of time when we reached Kobarid late in the afternoon (just going from Bled) so were only able to drive on through it. We were really sorry we didn't have a full day or even two to spend just in Kobarid. They have a walking tour that itself takes 3 + hours plus you need several hours for the museum. I know you probably don't want to hear this but I suggest doing a separate trip just to Slovenia unless you are able to really allocate a few days out of your current itinerary to spend there. Kobarid is just not convenient to get into and out of quickly whether by train and/or car. Sorry.
Ouch. I'm afraid you're right. I may just spend part of a day peering from a train window at the countryside and using my historical imagination--It's so easy to make the Venice-Udine-Gorizia-back to Venice loop, crossing the Piave River twice--all territory covered by the Italian retreat from Caporetto. I'll miss the most scenic country--around Caporetto (Kobarid) itself--but as you say, that will have to come next time. Thanks for the info about there being no train service in Kobarid.
