Do crowds matter to you? There will be more cruise ships and tourists in general in May than in April (as you can tell from these responses). Also, you have a greater chance of getting a mini-heat wave in May if that would bother you, but it is also true that May may not be any better than April when it comes to torrential rain for a few days.
Here is the cruise schedule thus far

Also, you can look at the weather archives for a few years back to see the general patterns, but no guarantees for your trip.

Thank you Sandra.
I was aware of May 1st in Italy, but not April the 25th.
We visited Venice for 3 nights a few years ago ( May6-9) ..the weather was glorious.
It is the place to enjoy being outside like no other city. (The crowds seem to be unavoidable.)
Kind of silly to worry so much about good weather- something one cannot do much about-
but all travelers hope for.

Crowds may be unavoidable but April 25 and May 1 can add to the tourist crush inside Venice considerably, especially around San Marco. So if you end up going during that time, plan to visit San Marco away from those holidays, and go to the islands or some other "lesser" tourist target.
I always plan my trips with the weather in mind, and very often move them one week later or earlier,to up my chances of getting the kind of weather that I prefer, most especially if my main reason for going someplace is to be outdoors. Unlike you, in Venice, I almost always spend 90 percent of my time inside museums and churches -- another great way to avoid the crowds I so loathe -- so I don't care what the weather is outside -- but that has nothing to do with your plans.

One reason we are returning to Venice is to see churches and museums we had not visited
the first time.
Sitting by the sea or in a lovely plaza on a sunny, blue day is something we cherish.
( after six months of cold and grey sky).
