Venice is providing such a beautiful backdrop to George Clooney's wedding
I have only been there once. I have to admit, I was not impressed. But, I am reconsidering it now. It looks beautiful, but it seems like you need to be able to afford its true beauty such as a nice hotel on the grand canal and gondola rides. Yes, being rich and beautiful always makes everything better.

I'm guessing a $13 million wedding would be beautiful almost anywhere.
I had heard the new Mrs. Clooney doesn't like the media attention that follows George (and now her) everywhere, so it surprised me that she/they chose a place that was so public. At least it didn't sound similar to Il Circo di Kimye in Florence.

I'll be in Venice at the end of next month. I am sure there are many people who are "not impressed" with the city. It can be a tremendously expensive place to stay (obviously depending on exactly where you do stay) and IMO the place has improved somewhat, smell-wise, over what it was when I first visited.
I never thought it wasn't beautiful and unique but I am one of those people who actually enjoys staying near, and being in, San Marco, especially at dusk and on into night when I think it is magical.

Jean, I had to look up Il Circo de Kimye.
On a totally different note, I just came across this piece: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2...ract?CMP=fb_gu
I think it has been posted for a while. Quite a contrast.

I have been looking at the photos on Daily UK mail and the new Mrs. Clooney sure looks like she is enjoying the attention and hopefully she does because it will always be there...with him..they sure got lucky with the weather but clearly every time they leave in the boats it is a regular parade.

$13M ??? i've heard the bride's family insisted on paying for the wedding... don't doubt George can pick up the tab at the Cipriani… but $13 M…. get real.
My husband and I visited Venice many times…. cheapy and posh. No matter what….. we always loved it. I can understand wanting to marry there if it's an important part of your history.

"It looks beautiful, but it seems like you need to be able to afford its true beauty such as a nice hotel "
Seems to whom?
Venice looks every bit as beautiful (or the same tasteless, preposterously over-wrought, bling) whether you're staying in a posh hotel or walking round between train journeys, eating a sandwich you made in Milan.
As for those absurd gondolas... The view's exactly the same from a vaporetto. True, vaporetti don't go up narrow canals - but you can see them on foot.
It's almost impossible to buy food in Venice without taking out a mortgage first - but the views are all free, and admission charges to its museums, art galleries and churches no higher than anywhere else.

Do they still have the 175 year old guys playing off key in San Marco? Two well-traveled sisters-in-law were there 10 days ago and both said that it was one the most beautiful cities they have visited.
It is a romantic and engaging city. Sometimes it is hard to avoid the kitsch, but that almost becomes part of the attraction. One time when we were there I went out to get a newspaper and I heard all the church bells ringing and told my wife that something was going on. Pope John Paul I had died and he was from Venice.

I wonder if she is going to continue with her career as a barrister, now that she is Mrs. Clooney.
Looking through all the photos, I am amazed that no guest tripped and fell descending into a water taxi. It looks tricky, wearing heels and short asymmetrical dresses. Those Christian Loubotins can be slippery.
