Venice in late May 2013
Having never been to Venice, we are looking for a reasonable place tostay for 4 nights in late May 2013. We want to spend our time just wandering through the streets and alleys. Our plan is to stay in the San MArco Area. Any suggestions.

Hi VB,
I have found www.booking.com to be very useful.
They give ratings based on customer reviews, as does www.tripadvisor.com
The Hotel Marconi, which is right at the foot of the Rialto, and where we stayed some years ago, is listed at about 190E w/bkfst.

We liked www.hotelgalleria.it when we stayed there for part of our honeymoon.

do you know why you want to stay in san Marco, Venicebound? Venice is very walkable and wherever you stay [within reason] you'll be able to get to the other bits.
in fact, there are some good reasons NOT to stay in San Marco - it attracts most tourists and can be more expensive than other areas.
san polo, santa croce and dorsoduro might be just as good if not better.

Second Ira's suggestion of Tripadvisor, as it gives you traveler feedback on the hotels along with the ability to book right from the hotel description (using the various services). I've used it for Venice and use it all the time now.
I also concur strongly with annhig--hotels very expensive, San Marco area very crowded, particularly during the day. We loved Dorsoduro and San Polo would also be good--much quieter areas.
