I have not yet been to Italy but am planning a similar trip in September.

I can tell you that all three cities are connected by train. Venice is the farthest north. Florence is a two-hour train ride south from Venice.

Rome is another 90-minute train ride south from Florence.

I am also staying five nights in Rome and actually found a nice apartment on SleepinItaly.com.

In Venice I am staying Ca Santo Spirito and in Florence at Al Duomo, both of which received excellent ratings on TripAdvisor.

The travel is constrained by time, not by distance. So it is best to plan by time unless you are walking I presume you are coming from a country where you use car to go everywhere?

Venice = Venezia S. Lucia
Florence = Firenze S.M.N.
Rome = Roma Termini

Venice has two stations. S. Lucia is on the island inside Venice. Mestre is on mainland and not at all in Venice. Mestre is used if you are taking train directly to/from the Venice Marco Polo airport.

Florence has two stations. Santa Maria Novella (S.M.N.) is the one in the center.

Rome has two large stations. Termini is more central than Tiburtina.

Train travel between the Italian cities is easy and inexpensive. Check out info at www.trenitalia.it. If you're flying from Paris and you intend to depart for home from Rome then maybe your itinerary is

1. Fly Paris to Venice (about 1.5 hours)
2. Train Venice to Florence
3. Train Florence to Rome

We took a similar trip in April... Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome. Plane from Paris to Venice, train between Venice and Florence and Rome.

how can anyone possibly help you with hotels when you have not given your budget.

i can tell you to stay at the de russie in rome, but i don't know if you want to pay 800 us a night for a room.
