Venice cruiseport to Milan by train--Question

Has anyone traveled recently from a cruise ship in Venice to Milan by train?
How best to get to train station in Venice?. Do I need train reservations? Can you
buy a train ticket on the train??
How long is the journey? In Milan, we will stay at Hotel Lancaster.
Any suggestions for day trips from Milan. ?My partner does speak a bit of Italian.
thanks for your replies.......

Cruise ships dock at a few different locations in Venice so there is no single answer to your question. Chances are, you can ride the people mover to Piazzale Roma and then walk across the Calatrava Bridge to the train station. A vaporetto (water bus) or private water taxi directly to the train station (Ferrovia) might also work depending on where your ship docks.

Venezia SL-Milan Centrale should have frequent train service. You must purchase your ticket BEFORE you board the train. Purchase online, at a ticket machine in the station, or at a ticket window from a person. fastest trains take about 2.5 hours. Check schedules and prices and book tickets here--the official website-- though summer schedules after June 15 are not fully loaded yet.

Your hotel is closer to Milan Cadorna station. You will need to take the subway (green line) from Centrale to Cadorna.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I did
learn that the Ruby Princess will be docking at
Marittima Terminal 117 on July 10th.

Is that far from the Venizia SL station?? We will
be in Milan for 6 nights---the 11th till the 17th,
and plan day trips from there. Any other advice?

Be prepared to find huge queues before the Venice Santa Lucia railway station ticket counters and even before the (very sophisticated) ticket machines!
