I'm hoping for some suggestions on a great, well-located, budget hotel in Venice for a group of 40 high school students.

I'm thinking...
-- less that $200 per night if possible, but can go up to $300.
-- charming and in a desirable neighborhood

I don't know Venice well, as I've only stayed there one night 10 years ago, so I really appreciate any advice!

Will they share rooms, as in 20 rooms at $200-300 per night per room?

You can try the youth hostel on the Giudecca Island across the large canal of the same name. Beautiful view over the Venice proper. And it is only a few minutes of vaporetto ride between the 2 islands. Except for some large 5 and 4* ones, hotels in Venice are generally small. Maybe this is the case where you should also consider Mestre (that I don't recommend normally to individual visitors) if you cannot find 20 rooms in Venice proper. Not as charming and you need to commute to Venice but when your are a budget group... Or maybe Lido.

And this is why I took my kids to Europe instead of sending them on school trips with teachers who are not familiar with where they taking the kids, how do you "guide" them? Depressing.

Venice is a small island.. most hotels will have a hard time will not be able to take groups of 40. .. most big bus type tours stay on the mainland in the bigger hotels and visit the island.

If this is in the off season, you might find some reasonably priced hotels on the Lido (the beach area of Venice), which I would prefer to Mestre. Just make sure you're near a vaporetto stop.

I enjoy making my own travel plans but II really believe you need professional help. I often find that travel agents don't know more than I do regarding some travel destinations but in this case you should contact two or three agents and select one who has done this before. There might be teachers in your city who might have experience with this. You can come back here and we can comment on the area or hotel.

How many kids per room? (Most rooms in Italian hotels have one double bed per room - so 3 or 4 kids per room - at 20 rooms - is going to be practically impossible.) I would check with the hostel to see about private dorm rooms for your group.

You might want to check with the Venice tourism office to see if they can identify hotels with as many rooms as you will need for enough people per room.

According to your post on Tripadvisor, it will be 1 night in February and as some mentioned there, there is the famous carnival from 07 to 17 Feb. You need to state your dates and if you can, avoid the period of carnival. Rooms will be most expensive of the year and you will have hard time finding availability even in Mestre. Much easier before or after the carnival.

There are quite a few convents that house groups, but I think they have two night minimums.

The hostel Santa Fosca in Cannaregio can do groups (way below you budget) with various rooming configurations (4 in a room or 2). Although their max in winter states groups of 30, you might check with them anyway as in the summer they take groups of 100.

Teachers are often just chaperones on such trips, they aren't "guides". If the parents haven't been there, they don't know anything, either. Many teens would rather go on their own trip with friends than go on a trip with their parents.

I went to Venice as part of a (just-graduated-from) high school group. We stayed in a larger hotel on the Lido - I have no idea which one, as it was 14 years ago now.

Teachers are booking the hotels , so it seems they are acting as tour directors at least.

I suppose some parents do no research .

I would try Hotel Rigel on Lido - - it handles groups, gets good reviews, and usually has very good rates. Hotel Helvetia on Lido may be able to handle you too, and is very nice. The Riviera is great, but might be too pricey.
