You will need to double that budget to get much in Venice.

Venice is pretty small, so almost anywhere on the main island would be fine. I stayed at Ai Tagliapietra a couple of years ago thanks to a recommendation from Fodorites and was very pleased. Even in high season the listed rates would fit in your budget.

try Hotel Mocenigo..good location, near Rialto, fish mMarket, pleasant walk to San Marcos...very close to vaporetto stop "Stae"....short walk to Al Zucca resto (excellent).

Here is another lovely B&B that is very reasonable for Venice: http://bbyouandme.com/index_en.html The price range is 60-140 euros for a room for two with private bath and breakfast. Often, room rates are discounted in August in the cities. Make sure wherever you stay that you have air conditioning. This B&B does and it's under your control.

We stayed here in December.
Brilliant location at Rialto Bridge (but I imagine busy in Summer), and tariff included big breakfast in a fabulous breakfast room.
(We love the photo in every Venice brochure of the view down the Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge - "our" hotel is in them all!)

Your best bet is to go to www.venere.com and type in Venice and your dates. Then you'll get an idea of what's available in your price range. From there, you can google the hotels' names and check out their websites, and come back here with further questions.

It is so busy at Rialto Bridge in summer that it looks like the entrance to Walmart on Black Friday. You may actually have to stand in line to get onto the bridge. The "street" from Rialto to San Marco is essentially two people wide, so you have two lanes of people moving in opposite directions. That said, this is part of the Venice experience.

I would suggest not staying in a hotel at or very near a vaporetto stop. Around the corner is fine, but this is how people commute and many of the commuters are out extremely early in the morning.

The good news is that the day trippers are generally on their way sometime around 4 and everything becomes more relaxed. Don't be daunted. It is worth all the trouble and more.

That's funny -- I thought I replied to this last night but must have deleted my message. I stayed at Hotel Mercurio near St. Mark's square -- it was just fine, I think within your price range, and very convenient for a brief stay.
