Three ladies (50ish) wanting to get apt in Venice for four nights; close to markets, restaurants, activity;
What areas would you recommend?
Want a three bed apartment preferably, would love canal view, low rise.
Nice place, 4 star ?
Where we can walk to everything.

When are you going to Venice? (You don't want to be on the ground floor during acqua alta, winter flooding caused by high tides.)

Sorry, forgot to say almost any area of Venice proper is convenient. It's a small place, very walkable. You might want to be near the Rialto, for the market, but this is a crowded area during the day.

Avoid places outside Venice, like the Lido and Mestre. You cheat yourselves of the real Venice experience.

Everyone has a favorite area of Venice. I personally like the area near San Maurizio -- walkable too most attractions but not Ground Zero for tourists. Since Venice isn't large, you can look in most other areas of the city for an apartment and not go too wrong.

My strategy would be to first search for apartments that meet your needs and budget, and then start narrowing them down as to area of the city. You can use vrbo.com and insert your search criteria. Another possibility is a site we've used with some success: venicerentals.com. You can send them an email with your list of requirements, and they'll come back with a list of suitable apartments, including photos, prices, locations, etc.

I would say don't rent too far east. It's great to see local neighbourhoods etc but it can be a slog getting to anywhere else. Dorsoduro is lovely as is Cannaregio.

Thank you for infor.....we are going April 21, 2015....busy is fine, we are there to enjoy the activity, liveliness of Venice, and all the hustle and bustle (from there we go on a 12-day tour of Croatia with a group. We are coming from Vancouver, BC Canada....thank you

Tarquin: Thank you for the area info....Dorsoduro and Cannaregio...this is what we needed to know; lots of apartments to rent, but areas we were not sure of...we like the though of Rialto, St Marks and Cannaregio....
Budget as I mentioned was in the 4-star range so upper mid range...NOT budget...this is my retirement trip, and so want my four days in Venice to be super, LOL.

We stayed in this 3 bedroom apartment in Dorsoduro -- lovely location, very nice apartment and your nights are available! It's by a canal and on the main floor but up 5 steps so no acqua alta issues.

Why do you have to book today..you just asked the question today..booking and researching an apartment takes some time...I don't have specific suggestions for you other than you have said twice you want to be in the hustle and center of the activity...so I would try to find something with view of Grand Canal (lots of action there...fun to watch) and maybe not far from Rialto or in San Marco. Some areas of Dorsoduro and Cannaregio can be out of the action (a good thing for some) and pretty quiet.

I can tell you that if you move about three "blocks" away from places like San Marco or the Rialto it can seem totally deserted in terms of "tourists" like yourself being there.

During our most recent trip we walked all over the city easily and I guess I never truly realized how small the place actually is.

We stayed in a 3 bedroom apartment in Dorsoduro last year. We rented from Views on Venice. I would recommend them and the area. We didn't have a canal view but it was a lovely apartment on the first floor. Look at their website.
