Venice and Milan

Milan is tough, but I'll recommend Hotel Palazzo Delle Stelline, which is a stone's throw from the church where you can see Da Vinci's Last Supper and also very convenient to the train that goes to and from Malpensa. It's also within walking distance of other major museums.
Even though it is a converted monastery, it's actually a business hotel and a wee bit sterile. But just because it hosts large group conferences, you might find it easy to book adjoining rooms or a suite large enough for extra beds. Their rates, for Milan, are reasonable, and I have had excellent results booking through this website:

In Venice, you might do better renting an apartment pricewise if you plan to stay for a week, and I also think La Calcina has quadruples, and many hotels do.

Oh-oh. Scratch that. I just noticed that the Delle Stelline is closed for all of August.
However, the website I gave you is a good resource. You can look in your price for your dates, and then check out the reviews on tripadvisor to hone in on the best.

Here is a hotel in Milan, the Hotel Teco, that offers triple family rooms which, if booked through Holiday City, cost 170 euro per night. Alas, it has no reviews on tripadvisor, but it is in a good location. And here is website that shows pictures of the hotel:

In Venice, try the Hotel Campiello, a small (15 rooms) family-owned hotel. We stayed there 3 years ago with 2 adults and 3 children and it was great and just last week. They have a suite on the top floor which was perfect. It had a small roof deck. It was located close to St. Mark's but it was up a side alley and was quiet. We found it reasonably priced and it included breakfast and it was very convienently located. Google search for them.
