Does anyone know if it is possible to cross the Grand Canal in Venice by traghetto even during the Vogalonga boat race which takes place on the 30 May ?

If my memory is accurate, the race doesn't end until midday. The traghetti shut down at 6, normally. On race day, the Italians who run the traghetti aren't interested in going to work for just a few hours. Plus, many participate in the race.
Race day is a unique day in Venice. One of the quietest days on the Grand Canal you will ever experience. You also get to witness several hundred tourists who no nothing about the race and stand at vaporetto stops waiting for boats that will never come.

gottheitch, an excellent question and I wish I had a good answer.
A simple email to your hotel will probably result in hearing that water taxi service is still available. I'm not sure if their routes are restricted during the race and what that means for each hotel location.
I assume the Alilaguna service is also shut down but an email to them will get a definitive answer. Still, you'd have to find a way to one of their pick-up points.
Obviously, you can arrange to be near Piazzale Roma before the Grand Canal gets shut down. There is inexpensive bus service to the airport which will not be affected.
The most important thing to do when planning a trip is to research annual events/holidays well and avoid traveling on those days. Otherwise, you could easily find yourself in a whirlpool of stress. Train and cab strikes are a bit more difficult to plan around but thousands of tourists find a way to deal with them at the last minute. None of this is fun but you do what you do when you have no choice.

A few years ago we needed to get from our hotel to the train station with our luggage and the canal was shut down because of the Vogalonga race. Our hotel had warned us ahead of time and had arranged for a porter with a cart. It would have been a long, hard walk over many bridges even with a rolling bag. This just made it part of the adventure.
