Venice - Traveling with an 8-year old

Traveling with my 8-year old son. What are the best things to do in Venice?

There's another post on here about what sites to see in Venice. And look at the information on Fodor's first.

My daughter absolutely loved 'Stravaganza, city of masks'; get him to read that first!

I'm guessing a kid would be fascinated with some of the same things I am in Venice. Riding on the vaporetto (bus/boat) is big fun (cheap too). Eating pizza at a canal-side outdoor cafe. Checking out the famous pigeons at the plaza of San Marcos. Seeing where they repair the gondolas. Like that.

Seeing the glass-blowing shops at Merano island; sampling the gelato!

Never been to Venice. However, when we took our three kids to Paris, they loved anything that could be climbed to the top of and looked out of ...Top of Notre Dame, top of Sacre Couer, top of the Arc de Triomphe. Although they found plenty to complain about, they never complained about climbing!

Are you familiar with the "Classical Kids" series of tapes/CDs? Each tells a fictional story that weaves in facts about a composer and his music. There is one about Vivaldi that is set in Venice. I recommend listening to it before your trip.

As a kind poster mentioned in another Venice thread, the boat ride is an attraction in itself, when you go out to the islands Murano, Burano, etc.

Use the traghetti to cross the Grand Canal at designated points. These are gondolas with two gondoliers. The idea is to stand up for the short ride across the canal (but you don't have to). Costs less than a euro per ride.

One of the posters mentioned climbing to the top of towers. For some reason, this seems to really appeal to kids. Therefore, be sure to go to the top of St. Mark's cathedral where you can see the horses, and walk outside to view the wonderful square. Also, I believe you can take an elevator to the top of the nearby tower.

Also, my kids loved feeding the pidgeons in the square and taking a gondola ride.

Get the book Vendela in Venice by Christina Bjork. It is the story of a young girl who travels to Venice with her Dad. It has great drawings and photographs and gives a lot of details of things they saw and enjoyed in Venice.
