We are going to Seville, Madrid and Granada in a week and wanted to do a tapas tour in each city. I am a vegetarian and I know some places give you free tapas with each drink. How do you know which bars will give you a free tapa ?I guess I am concerned if I should tell them I am vegetarian when I order the drinks or is it rude to just assume we get free tapas? What is the proper etiquette in ordering? Thanks for the help.

This phrase should help when he brings the tapa.. which.. from my experience, majority in Granada give very generous tapas.

¿Tiene algo para vegetarianos? or tell them "Soy vegetariana" when you order ( Soy vay-hay-tah ree anna)

Bear in mind that a free tapa in Seville isn't common. I don't recall anything other than maybe some olives. It was common in Granada and to a lesser extent in Madrid.

Other than a puzzled look that says, "Are you out of your mind!?" be prepared for the questions (in Spanish, of course) of, "Are eggs, butter, fish, poultry, cheese, etc., OK?". I have family members who are Vegan, and they have a tough time in Spain.

If you want to make food part of your tourist experience of Spain, it might do better to look up local recipes for everywhere you are going and eat the non-meat dishes that locals eat. For instance, in Andulucia, locals eat a cold soup made of ground almonds that is garnished with grapes. You might need to track down a place that reliably makes it with vegetable rather than chicken broth, but it would be worth the effort. Not all gazpacho is the same. Some is much more refined than others, or spicier, or thicker, thinner. If you like gazpacho, a gazpacho crawl could be fun. Spaniards do lovely things with egg and have delicous cheeses (sometimes served with roasted peppers & oil) -- so you can actually have some memorable non-meat dishes in Spain.

But you need to do some research about the local of cuisines of your destinations.

I had free tapa only in Granada. Some of the more vegetarian friendly tapa places in Granada I went to were Babel World Fusion and Om Kulsum, pretty good tapas, but not very Spanish. Have a look at my trip report, am a vegetarian, and managed really well in Spain.

I would recommend that you look for menus of restaurants and choose places you like, rather than going for vegetarian restaurants, you'll get better food.
