We will be touring central Europe in June/July. We had thought of heading to Varna for few days to have a short beach break, but from the research I've done I'm not sure it will offer what we're after. Huge family resorts are not our scene these days, we'd prefer something smaller. Can anyone recommend somewhere in the area where we can have a few quiet days on the beach? Are any of the resorts quieter than others? Looking for something 4 star, or nice 3 star,
Thanks.
Varna area, quiet beach location/hotel

A huge family resort is what Varna is. We preferred Mamaia, a resort area on the north side of Constanta, Romania. Sorry I can't remember the name of the hotel but it was right at the beach. We had a 10th floor room with balcony looking out over the still waters of the Black Sea. There are many hotels along the beach.
Thanks hopscotch, I'll check it out and see if it will fit into our route.
If you are referring to Varna, Bulgaria I would like to point out that it is by no means "a large family resort." Varna is a charming city offering much more than beaches. The stroll through the city center takes no longer than 30 to 45 min (to give you an idea of the size), the walk through the Marine Garden, which provides beautiful views of the sea, is another 40-45 min. Varna has ancient Roman ruins, churches, a gorgeous Cathedral, a planetarium, a dolphinarium, marine museum, opera house, very good restaurants and cafes, excellent for people watching.
You could always try Balchik, just up the coast
TAD1,
I just found my travel log. The name of the hotel in Mamaia is Riviera. Web site is

And a few links to Varna hotels

Tsvetana,
What we are looking for is a few quiet days on the beach, which I don't think we'll get at the resorts close to town. If we stay at a hotel in Varna itself will we have access to a nice beach that is not too crowded? Or is there somewhere else in the area that you can recommend?
