The museum will be closed for 6 months from October next year. During that time it will be renovated and the emergency escape routes will be improved.
The main collection (at least 75 paintings) will be exhibited at the Hermitage aan de Amstel during the renovations.

Must be some interesting paintings.
My friend just told me about this, but one of my favorite paintings (Cafe Terrace at Night, by Van Gogh) is exhibited at the Kröller-Müller Museum in another city. There are lots more Van Gogh paintings there if one wanted to supplement what is exhibited at the Hermitage aan de Amstel.

Happy sightings!
Thanks Hetismij - nice to see you're back!
I was just there and no matter how I try or how many of his works I see, I just don't care for Van Gogh's work. Nonetheless, thanks for the update for all of those who wish to visit.
The Rijksmuseum is another matter however. The museum and its vast works are simply amazing, incredible and humbling. I was so moved by the collective talent assembled here and would go to AMS again if only to visit the museum again. I went at 9 am when it opened and would recommend this to visitors. By 11 am it was difficult to get through the massive crowds coming in. Take advantage of the audio tour.
I am relieved to see that this closure is AFTER the open garden weekend in June, I am definitely going in 2012!
Looks like the Van Gogh Museum closed a little ahead of schedule. Last night after closing, many of the paintings were being packed up to move across town to the Hermitage. There will a one week gap until the paintings are ready for display in the Hermitage on 29 Sept.
The Van Gogh is scheduled to reopen 25 April 2013.
In the meantime in the museum quarter, the Stedelijk Museum next door to the Van Gogh (modern and other works) has reopened.
