Vacation Rental in Venice

I've never gone the "vacation rental" route, so I don't know where to start, but I'm convinced that I'd like to go that way next time I visit Venice. Can anyone recommend a service? Or maybe a property you know that can be relied on? Planning a Summer 2015 trip for 2 weeks.

Thanks in advance.

do you mean in a general sense or from VRBO - a mega dealer hooking owners and renters together?

Hi,

I spent hours and hours searching for an apartment in Venice for our trip earlier this year. We ended up at Tiffany Canal View Apartment, in Dorsoduro and it was fantastic! 2bedrooms/2 full baths, great location. We plan to stay there again when we go back to Venice. I reviewed it here: http://herewegoagain-italy.blogspot....ng-review.html

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I was speaking generally of renting an apartment, rather than staying in a hotel. I will check out your links. Thanks very much for those. We like the idea of experiencing local markets, so having a kitchen makes sense. Being able to do some laundry makes for light packing. And an apartment seems fairly cost-effective.

Anyone think I'm off base here?

We're currently on holiday in Venice, in a rental apartment through VRBO. Apartments are our preferred way to travel in general, even when we're without our teen children. We have found Venice to be more on the expensive side for dining (and we live in an expensive city so we have a reference), so it's nice to enjoy breakfast of our choosing in the apartment, and to have the ability to bring "home" fresh pasta, sausage and a bottle of wine to make a light supper at the end of a busy sightseeing day and at a fraction of the cost of a restaurant meal. Plus, it's really nice to have personal space, especially if we've been traveling more than a couple of days.

Renting an apartment in a foreign city for the first time can seem daunting. I would suggest going with a known rental group (VRBO, Homeaway, etc.) for a first rental, and choosing an established owner with an apartment that has a considerable rental review history.

cjermanns- it is definitely the way to go! I consider my Venice landlady a friend; I've rented from her five times. She speaks perfect English (she is a Venitian) and has two different apartments. I like both for different reasons.

She has a 1-bedroom (2nd room has pullout couch)/1.5 bath on the ground floor, in Cannaregio. And she has a one-bedroom/one bath in the Castello, on the first floor (no lift).

Here is a link to the one in Cannaregio: http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p266505 It is close to shopping and restaurants, but very quiet. Love this apartment. (I should clarify- it is a one bedroom with a pull-out couch in the "living room", but the living room has a door that closes, so is quite useful as a 2nd bedroom.)

I'll see if I can find a link for the other apartment.

Good luck! (I also love SleepInItaly.com and RentalInRome.com (which also has Venice apartments). I have found both of these agencies to be thorough and responsive.

An apartment is certainly one of the best ways to go, we much prefer this to staying in a hotel. We stayed at this VRBO apt this June, its about 5 minutes away from San Marco, the owner are extremely friendly and nice and the apartment was as described, though a little smaller than I'd expected, but it was ideal for our requirements. http://www.vrbo.com/408031

My sister rented this Arsenale apartment this summer, much bigger, with a small garden where they would breakfast and sit in the evenings with a glass of wine. http://www.homeaway.co.uk/p1026217

You can finds any number of vacation rentals, the important thing is to try and find out how genuine the owners/reviews are. Enjoy your vacation, planning it is fun by itself

We used Views on Venice this past June and stayed in Ca'Dell Artista. Loved the apartment, the location and VOV was great to work with.

Going in the summer be sure to find out about AC (Venice is both hot and humid) and check out how many flights of stirs there are - since apt houses in Venice often don't have elevators.

Two weeks there sounds wonderful - you get all of the semi-empty Venice in the evening and early morning.

Thanks to everyone.

When I've narrowed my choices, are there any questions in particular that I should ask the owner/agent before I commit?

We have rented in Venice four times through VRBO, and it worked well for us. Three times in the same apartment in Dorsoduro, and once in Santa Croce. Neither apartment is available now for rent - both have been sold.

We have booked for September / October next year, for five weeks, again via VRBO, and hopefully it will be OK. The VRBO reference is 6142339. Dealing with the owner has been easy, emails responded to very quickly.

Questions to ask:
Air conditioning is important in Summer, as mosquitos can be a hassle. Insect screens on windows in Venice are unknown.
Find out the exact address (Sestiere and number) and have a look at the street on Google street view. It will give an idea of the general area, and also assist you in finding the place.
Arrangements for meeting the owner and getting keys are important. For the place in Dorsoduro, the owner mailed us the keys, while in Santa Croce we had clear instructions as to where to collect keys.
Payment - deposit via PayPal, bank transfer, balance in cash or whatever. We have had no issues with paying cash on arrival.

Apartment rental is certainly the way to go.
