US visitors numbers to Ireland fall by 11%

Just a news item on the radio this morning. All other travellers especailly from Europe are very much up on last year, but visitors from the US are significantly down by 11%. Wonder why?

Hi P,

Could it have something to do with the exchange rate?

That should have been 'especially from Europe'.

ira, there isn't a marked difference between the exchange rate from today and this time last year!

The 11% drop accounts for a difference between this year to date and last year?

Its not the actual exchange rate. I think its the cost in general. I feel many of the tourist attractions are quite high priced a well as the "tourist" restaurants they tend to reccommend. This is why I try to post good value eats when I see an article or come across a place here in Dublin that I feel is good value.

Good value in Dublin are the National Museum, Kildare street, Art Museum Nassau Street, Chester Beatty Library (Behind Dublin Castle), Collins Barrick Museum . All are free! Paying to see Kilmainham Jail, Book of Kells (Although the tour combined with the book entrance is better value for history buffs!)and Guinness is very expensive for a family and it annoys me as I think it puts people off coming again.

Even ourselves when we go to somplace like Clifton for a bank holiday weekend...dinners get very expensive unless you want a burger or fish and chips. It forces you to spend more and eat in places you may not have intended.

I don't think they are addressing this problem here and we rely strongly on tourism as one the stong industries in Ireland.

SiobhanP - I think that you have a point. I think that a big proportion of the problem came from the Euro change over when there was a huge abuse on the part of retailers in inflating their prices. Business is business, but in this respect a very short sighted, greedy outlook that I fear may come back and bite them.

Tourism is vital for Ireland, some much needed regulation on the part of Government and Tourist Authority is needed.
