It's possible to see Orvieto as a day trip by train from Rome. However, because of the distance and train schedules, you really need to spend a night in Assisi in order to have time to see the sights.

Jane - Actually Assisi is only 2 hours by train, so it's an easy day-trip from Rome. I've done it many times ...
For train times see:

Hope this helps ...

I agree that Assisi can be done as a day trip but it is quite an exhausting day. It is a lovely town at night when the daytrippers are gone and I recommend that you stay over to get the most out of your visit there.
I loved Orvieto...wonderful town...beautiful cathedral and very interesting Etruscan ruins.

We are planning on spending the night in assisi (haven't been their in 30 years as a back packer) and taking the train to orvieto. Anyone done that before? Easy or nightmare? We will be taking the train to leonardo da vinci airport late next day from orvieto for overnight before early morning flight...any suggestions on hotels.
