Umbertide (near Cortona) - Place to Stay / Agriturismo or other?

My husband and I will be visiting a friend in Umbertide (in the hospital), and we are looking for a place to stay within a half hour to an hour drive from the center of that town, which is north of Perugia and east of Cortona. We would like to stay someplace relaxing that could be a base for exploring a few towns in the surrounding area. Also, we will driving to Umbertide from north of Rome, and then heading to Calabria.

Any help is appreciated - thanks in advance!

I would start by looking on booking.com, and also on Tripadvisor under 'Specialty lodging" for Umbertide and its surrounding towns, just so you can read reviews. After that, try Agriturismo.it, but see if you can track down additional reviews for anything you find.

This alpaca farm is near Umbertide and quite near a highly regarded restaurant (Ristorante Locanda Di Nonna Gelsa), but since I haven't stayed there I recommend tracking down reviews if you think it is well located for your purposes.

An alpaca farm - very cool! It looks like it is only 10 minutes from the hospital. Thank you for your suggestions!

We loved staying in Montone, only about 15 minutes from Umbertide. We stayed here

I have to say that this hotel was the best bargain I've encountered in Italy. We had a corner room with fantastic views.

It is a bit on the plain side, but very new looking and clean. I would go back in a minute.

Montone had a charm of its own and some great food. We explored the countryside and also went to Gubbio.

Our best day trip was up to La Verna, where St Francis established a monastery, and where he was supposed to have received the stigmata.

It was gorgeous, wild, and so far off any beaten tourist path. There were pilgrims, of course.

Thank you - will check out the hotel and La Verna. La Verna sounds like something we would really enjoy!

A friend of a friend said they stayed at Le Terre Dei Cavalieri outside of Cortona. If anyone has been there or heard of it, please let me know - thanks!
