UK: Lerwick & Portree Buses

Jump to last reply

I'll have one day in Portree and Lerwick as cruise stops and am planning my own excursions but have a question about the buses.

Lerwick: Sunday, June 26 (ship is in port from 8:00 - 5:00 pm) I was planning on going via local bus to Jarlshof to wander this ancient site, then have lunch at the Sumburgh Hotel and take the bus back to Lerwick. It appears that bus #6 leaves the Viking Bus Station at 9:15 & arrives at the Sumburgh Hotel at 10:12 and the return bus leaves the hotel at 1:58, arriving in Lerwick at 2:55. So, I would have 4 hours to wander and possibly have lunch (or at least a drink). There are no later buses that would get me to the port in time. Here are my questions: do I buy a ticket on the bus or at the station? And, are they reliable in terms of the schedule? (The other option is to forget Jarlshof and walk to Knabb, Clickman Broch and explore the town.)

Portree: Wed., June 29 (in port from 10-6) I wanted to go to Dunvegan Castle and gardens, but it doesn't look like the timing will work. Ideally, I'd be able to get off the ship and get the 10:16 bus #56 from Portree Square which arrives @ Dunvegan Castle at 10:59. However, in order to be sure I don't miss the ship, I'd have to take the 1:49 bus back to town (arrives at 2:33). That's only 3 hours for the castle, gardens, etc. So, my question is - and I know you don't have a crystal ball - if I take the bus TO the castle, should it be doable to have a taxi pick me up at the castle? I hate to miss out on seeing something of the island but I may end up spending the day in Portree...

Thanks for any advice or two cents on alternatives!
