Uber in Poland and Germany

I will be visiting Krakow, Warsaw, Gdansk and Berlin shortly. The Uber website indicates that Uber is available in the cities in Poland, but can anyone vouch for this?

For Berlin the website says my “options” are a “metered uber taxi van.” What’s that?

Also, I presume I use the same app as when in the US? Will I be able to use the app in English?

Thanks for any tips!

Uber is available in Warsaw & Kraków. Yes, same app you already have, it will still be in English.

In Berlin, you can only get Uber Black.
Which is a black limo service with licensed drivers.
Uber Pop is no longer available.

Nevertheless, taxis are always available in Berlin.
If you want to use an app-based service, you can use the MyTaxi app. It's official taxis, but you can "call" and pay with the app.

Cowboy -- thank you; good to know about taxi availability - I'll get the app now.

Our family of five was in Warsaw last week. One taxi and one Uber from the airport. 70 PLN in the taxi and 28 PLN in the Uber.

PS - that was at midnight. Taxi rates may have been on a late night rate.

If you have a Capital One Quicksilver linked to your uber account you get 20% off fares too.

My airb&b host is offering a private driver for 100 PLN which sounded good until I see these taxi/uber prices! Our flight arrives on a Sunday at 9:30 pm - do you foresee any problem with uber or taxi availability if I cancel the private driver?

Never heard of Capital One Quicksilver but will look into it.

Thanks everyone!

Our son lives in Warsaw for the next little while. He has not had a problem getting a Uber from the airport (only four occasions mind you).

We don't know how far your drive is. Your cost may be higher.

We landed in the late morning so I don't have personal experience but I wouldn't think you'll have a problem in a large, capital city.

FWIW, our hotel (Bristol) quoted us a fare of 150 PLN for airport transfer service, so your Airbnb host's offer is quite a bit better than that. I googled around and found out that a regular taxi picked up on arrival should cost between 40-70 PLN so that's the route we took. Since taxis were plentiful at the airport Uber didn't even occur to us at the time. But we used uber during our stay.

You could google prearranged transfer service and see what that costs. That is sometimes a good way to go when arriving after a long overseas flight. Guaranteed stress free.

Thanks for all the information and reassurance about using uber and taxis in Poland.

I should have been more specific in my earlier post -- our airb&b is in Krakow, not Warsaw. I have decided to keep the private driver despite the price disparity. I like the no-hassle idea of relying on the host's driver to get us there and hopefully also make sure we get in OK.

Thanks again for your help! Fodorites always come through

In case anyone is wondering, we used uber flawlessly in Krakow, Warsaw and Gdansk.

Interestingly, the taxis waiting at the train stations in Warsaw and Gdansk were not interested in taking us the short distance to our hotel without an exorbitant fixed fee, so we walked several yards away and called for an uber who was happy to take us. We also did well with uber from Gdansk to Sopot, a 30-minute ride usually done by train.

In all cases using uber we found the cost to be about the same as public transportation but we saved a lot of time, and in some cases, met some interesting drivers.

One note, in Krakow we were headed to the train station during rush hour and used the mytaxi app -- this worked well, since taxis are permitted to use the bus lanes which saved time we would have spent waiting in unexpected traffic.

I'm may be flying into warsaw at 11 pm, is it still safe to use uber at this time?

I won't have a data plan, can uber just be used with a wifi connection? Is there free wifi at the chopin warsaw airport?

Uber should be as safe to use at 11pm as it is at 11am. The data could be an issue. Sure, you can request the car using airport WiFi (I don’t know if they have free WiFi or not) but then when you are outside trying to meet your driver you will likely be out of WiFi range and won’t be able to check their status or location on the app if there is a problem. It’s not a plan I would make personally. I would either arrange a driver in advance or look for a taxi on arrival.

And you don't want to use a regular taxi why?

This thread is two years old - you really should start a new/current tread of your own.
