two weeks split between Austria and Italy.
Hello we are two of us in our early 40's we plan to make a two week trip to Austria and Italy.
We are travelling for the first time to Europe and would be glad if you would share your inputs on what all we should include. We travel from India and have about 8 months to work on our plans so all your suggestions are welcome. We are OK with rail bus and flights.

Our dates are not finalized yet but definitely after October.
As this is our first visit we really are in an exploratory mode.
Our interests include visiting historical places, good food and an opportunity to absorb a bit of the local culture.
It would be great if you can suggest where all we should plan to go considering that 6-7 days for Italy is likely to be the biggest constraint.

Another constraint you might have is which airports have good flights for you.
In November you chances are high you can experience rainy weather in Italy, and towards the end of November there can be snow in Austria. So if you can fly to Austria first, that would be good. Vienna is a large and extremely interesting European city, wonderfully preserved and filled with interesting art, architecture and imperial history, so 3 or 4 days there would be best.
After that, I would recommend a plane flight to Italy, and a choice between between Rome or Florence (but not both). If you want to experience a bit of the local culture, you need to be there for 3 or 4 days, or else you are just sightseeing with the rest of the tourists all the time.
If you really prefer to go to Venice, which is now mostly about tourism and very little local culturel, then see how easy it is to fly from Venice to India, and be sure you book a hotel away from the parts that can get flooded in November. It is better to be in a city, I think, with lots to do and see. For many people, Rome is the most fascinating introduction to Italy, because it has both the great sights of ancient Rome and beautiful Renaissance art.
But you should study all 3 cities and see which one you want to see most, and hopefully you can find an easy way to get back to India from there.
