My husband and I took a 16 day trip last summer to Paris, Bellagio, Florence, Sienna, San Gimignano, and Monteriggioni. It was my second trip to Europe, my husband's first. We absolutely loved everything we did, and fell completely in love with Italy. We want to go back this June (last two weeks) and possibly a third week the first week of July. We used the rail system and found it very convenient. We keep reading about all of the different places we could go, and just can't seem to decide on an itinerary. We would prefer to stay in a place for at least three or four days, then move to the next place. We don't care as much about trying to see everything, but rather want to find another four or five places to see and experience. We are undecided about renting a car, but wouldn't be opposed. We rented apartments (except in Bellagio), and were happy with that accommodation. Lastly, we love food, art, wine, architecture, and nature. Moderately active, not afraid to be on our feet walking for 10-12 hours.

What about Rome and Sicily? Or Rome and the Amalfi Coast? Or, if you have 3 weeks, Venice, Rome and Sicily or the AC. If you are interested in any of these places, consider going early in June. Cooler and less crowded.

Rome and Venice should definitely be on your list! With two weeks, pick one other location (perhaps a smaller city, maybe Orvieto?). Give yourself three full days in Venice, and a minimum of four full days in Rome. Buon viaggio!

I would include Venice, the Dolomites, Umbria, and Rome--in that order. You will need a car for the middle two destinations.

Thanks all, I think we will definitely fly into Venice, and spend four days (including day we get in) there. Possibly adding a day for a day trip to Verona or Padua. I'm doing lots of reading on your other suggestions.

With 2 weeks + and a such a sensible agenda you have loads of opportunities. You may think we mad but do look at the Po valley and using the trains and bicycles to get around. The Po is dead flat and there are many safe bike paths joining places like Bologna, Ferrara, Palma, Padua, Verona, Venice etc etc. each city is a little gem and the food is excellent. Look at staying in Agroturismo as well as appartments.

If, on the other hand you want to do what everyone else does, do the Rome/Florence/Venice thing, its great fun and in the months you have selected very good.
