Two questions: ATM fees and rental phones

Does anyone know, does the RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) charge an ATM fee? Somewhere I read that it doesn’t, but in today’s world that seems so unlikely. Maybe I read wrong, and I can’t find that page again! Maybe it meant only those who had accounts with them, or only those folks who live in the UK. It sure would be nice to not have that fee.

Also, can anyone recommend a rental cell phone company for UK that I might contact? Thanks

Only your bank can tell you whether you will be charged and how much. Note that different kinds of accounts have different fees.

No banks in the UK will charge fees -- the fee if any will be charged by your own bank.

There are many options for phone in the UK -- renting is seldom the cheapest. Either unlocking your own phone (depending on what service you have now) or buying a cheap unlocked phone is usually better than renting.

But who is your current carrier and what sort of phone do you have?

So, good news with the bank question since we'll be using a bank debit card that does not charge a fee!

Our phone carrier will not unlock the phone, so we'll take your advice and buy a cheap unlocked phone. Might I ask, where should we buy it?

I don't think any European bank charges North Americans an ATM fee, I think I read there was some international agreement to that effect (not sure about that, but I remember it). They can charge people within their own country, though, if from a different bank (similar to the US). That is a real bank will not charge a foreigner, but an independent private company which may have some ATMs but does not issue cards can.

YOur question is a little unclear, but it sounds like you do not have a RBS account and are a foreigner to Scotland. So then any fee would only be from your own bank.
