Two days in Salzburg, take short or longer SOM tour + Hallstatt?

We arrive in Salzburg late in the day on April 24th (yay!) and are staying three nights. Thought we're not huge Sound of Music fans, I get the impression that we would see some scenery outside of Salzburg as well as hearing more historical information on Bob's Tours. We can get the tour on the last full day we're in Salzburg - the first day is booked already. We like gardens, architecture, history, and walking a lot. It looks like Salzburg itself is small enough to see in a leisurely day.

My question is, first, is the tour worth it for seeing the mountain towns and villages outside Salzburg, perhaps more easily than on our own by bus? And second, is it worth the time continuing on to Hallstatt, or will we by spending lots of time getting there and not enough walking around.

I don't know how similar the towns of Hallstatt and St Gilgen are - and if we can get the flavor of the area from the morning tour. Thank you in advance for your input.
