Traveling in October w/ hubby & want to stay in a charming Agriturismo / B&B type for 3 nights. Would like to rent a car on our way up from the Amalfi Coast. Thinking about Pienza, Cortona Montepulciano areas - more toward the Southern part of Tuscany.
Would like to stay in same place for 3 nights and use as a base to explorea area. Any ideas? Also, thoughts about best area to rent car from? we would be coming in by train - and then will go to Rome from there, so will need to be near train town
thanks!

Hi; Try these sites for places to stay. www.agriturist.it/uk/ or www.bbitalia.it Dick
pattytravel,
If it is the end of October look at http://www.montalcino-tuscany.it/sagra_del_tordo.htm
I have a large file on southern Tuscany it is too big to post but if you e-mail I will send it. hschulte47@yahoo.com
great! will email you now Henry
Thanks iris as well, will look now!
We stayed in a place closer to Florence that is an active olive grower with beautiful views over it's many acres of olive trees. It's called Fattoria di Maiano www.fattoriadimaiano.com
Go to Spannocchia.com. Its a working farm (mostly botanic but there are the little piggies), part of a foundation on sustainable farming. Lots of interesting old buildings and options on rentals. Friendly english speakers; peaceful, remote but close to siena. returning myself in a couple of weeks and i get totally relaxed just imagining it. in October you can pick grapes.
It sounds like you are planning a wonderful trip!
You should pick up and return the car in the town of Chiusi. It is just an easy one hour drive from Chiusi to the Montepulciano/Pienza/Val d'Orcia area. Check these websites for car rental-
autoeurope.com
Kemwell.com
I love staying at the agriturismo Fonte Bertusi (4 times, so far)-

Here is a beautiful (but more expensive) choice-

I feel the Montepulciano/Pienza/Val d'Orcia area is more lovely than the Cortona area. There are many charming villages within a 10-30 drive of Pienza.
I like the guidebook Insight Guides Tuscany for planning my daily itineraries while in the area-
http://www.amazon.com/Insight-Guide-Tuscany-Guides/dp/1585733008
Your agriturismo or B&B owners will be a great resource for dining.
If you can add more days to stay in the area, do so.
Enjoy your trip!
Renting the car in Chiusi is a great suggestion. We've rented from autoeurope in the past. Be aware that you need to take a taxi from the train station in Chiusi to the car rental. It's cheap & easy - but not within walking distance. I agree - stay near Pienza, Montepulciano, San Quirico, Montalcino - rather than Cortona. We always stay at La Saracina - but I didn't see where your budget is, so can't advise if that would be appropriate for your travel needs or not.

Yes dorkforcemom, I'm interested in your recommendations in La Saracina... I am not familiar with that town.
Could you send? thanks!
Thanks all for all the great info. Will definitely also look into renting the car from Chiusi
Hi Patty - we trained from Rome to Chiusi and the Avis car rental guys were so nice and came to pick us up at the train.
We spent three lovely days at Terre di Nano in October 2007 and loved it. It's about a mile from Monticchiello. We enjoyed our terrace each morning with coffee and every evening with wine. The owners are so nice and it was the highlight of our trip.

Hi sheri_lp,
Wow, Terre di Nano looks wonderful! The location is great and the property lovely. Thank you for the information. I'll keep it in mind for future trips, including a possible trip next May with 5 friends.
zoe - you won't regret it and give my regards to Giorgio! (the English speaking owner's son). It was harvest time but everything was still so beautiful and peaceful.
Aw shucks!! The Terre di Nano is booked for the days of our time in Tuscany!!
Ok, so now I'm looking at Villa Poggiano, Fonte Bertusi, Il Giglio or Il Chistro.
