Tuscany Itinerary Help
My wife and I are going to be on a short trip to Tuscany (our first) August 16 through August 22. We are planning to spend 1-2 nights in Florence and the remainder of the time in Chiusi, which will serve as our base for day trips in Tuscany and Umbria. We still haven't decided whether we will stay in Florence at the beginning or end of our trip, but our choices are: (i) Tue and Wed. nights, 8/16-8/17 in Florence, then Chiusi 8/18-8/22 OR (ii) Chiusi, 8/16-8/20, then Florence from Saturday evening, 8/20 through Mon afternoon, 8/22.
Given the number of things that are closed on Sundays, are we better off being based out of Florence or Chiusi on Sunday, 8/21? Whichever makes most sense will probably determine whether we spend the first part or last part of our trip in Florence.
Thanks so much in advance.

What time does your flight land? Many hotels in Florence will not let you into your room until noon or later, so you might want to spend that time on a train to Chiusi.
On the other hand, your hotel will hold your luggage for you, so you might want to spend that time walking around Florence.
If you were thinking about heading straight to Chiusi and renting a car, you will not be able to do so until Monday morning. The Etruscan museum in Chiusi is marvelous, but you should double check to make sure it is open on the Sunday when you would arrive.
Likewise, you will not be able to drop off a car on Sunday unless you do it at the airport in Florence.
If you have specific museums you want to see in Florence, check the opening times to help you decide.

PS: I wanted to add that you should also look at the Trenitalia website to see the train schedules to and from Chiusi. That might help you decide.
And if you have target sights in Umbria or rural Tuscany -- like churches or museums -- be sure you know what times they might be closed.

Sorry! I now realize you are arriving in Italy mid-week. But my general advice about being mindful of when car rental places are open, what the train schedules are, and which museums you most want to see are open and shut still apples.
