I'm considering visiting Turkey in the next few weeks and it will be my first visit to this country. How enjoyable will the beaches be in October? Will there still be many people enjoying the coastline and will the water be warm enough for swimming? Also, how easy will it be to just show up in Istanbul without any hotel or bus/air reservations to travel down the coast and across to Cappadocia? I'm a very experienced, indepedent traveler, but want to make sure it's not going to be a hassle without reservations made in advance this time of year. I want to have the flexibility once there to decide how long I stay in each location and where I go. Is the bus the best way to go traveling between cities, or will I lose a lot of time on a 2-3 week trip and is it better to fly in between the top attractions instead? Istanbul, Ephesus, Cappadocia, Pamukkale, Bodrum and a blue cruise are must-dos on my list. Thanks!
Turkey last-minute trip in Sept./October

Istanbul lodging may be the only problem regarding late or no reservation, depending on type of accommodation you desire and possibility of conventions, fairs, etc.
The Southern beaches will be great and the sea will be at its warmest 25-29 degrees.
Makes good sense to fly the longer distances, Istanbul-Antalya, istanbul-Kayseri, Istanbul-Izmir, Kayseri-Antalya, Kayseri-Izmir, and drive Izmir-Antalya, and off to Pamukkale. Unless you are interested in Nicea or troy or assos or Pergamon, in which case you should start driving from Istanbul or back to Istanbul from the coast.
Take the blue cruise at Gocek, Marmaris or Fethiye.
You may eliminate Bodrum from your itinerary.
There's a bit of a circuit most travelers do in Turkey. The circuit can be picked up/left off from wherever and can be done in about 2 weeks. Most people either fly into or out of Istanbul.
ISTANBUL - Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, Basilica Cistern, Taksim, Topkapi Palace, Golden Horn, Grand Bazaar, Egyptian Spice Market. Stay in the Sultanahmet area – it’s close to everything.
SELCUK - Ephesus, Bascilica of St. John, House of Virgin Mary, Priene-Miletos-Didyma.
PAMUKKALE
FETHIYE
CIRALI / OLYMPOS – Olympos ruins, 4km secluded beach and the mythical Chimera Flames.
CAPPADOCCIA - fairy chimneys and underground cities.
back to ISTANBUL.
as you see this is a lot of moving around from place to place..so you will have to pick and choose the places that might interest you the most.
Do you plan to rent a car ?? or use the public bus transportation ?? this will make a bit of a difference as having your own car will give you more freedom...or flying from destination to destination will speed up the travel time between different area.
I would skip the idea of a blue cruise in late october as the weather and seas can be unpredictable..you are better just to take a day boat trip from either the Fethiye location or Cirali / Olympos location.
from Selcuk to Antalya following the coastal route with a stop in Pamukkale you can do all this very easy by buses.
Selcuk - Pamukkale
Pamukkale - Fethiye
Fethiye - Cirali
Cirali - Antalya
fly or bus from antalya to goreme ( nevsehir or kayseri )
