Turkey - Car Rental
My husband and I will be visiting Izmir and the Aegean coast in mid-September and are curious about the possibility of renting a car for the week. We're in our 50s and have rented autos and driven in numerous countries and are comfortable with both reading maps and the possibility of getting lost (and thus having more adventures).
Questions:
* Any recommended car rental companies? (or those to avoid)
* Do we need to pick-up and drop at the airport in Izmir or are there locations in the city which might be easier or more affordable?
* Are most rentals gas or diesel?
* Any special drivers license needed? (we are from US)

We used Auto Europe for our rental in Turkey and for rentals many times in Europe. The are located in Portland, ME and are a consolidator. Your rental will be thru one of their contracts but you deal with AE who I have found to be great to deal with.
Our rental was gas. No special permits needed 2 years ago.
We picked our car up at the Izmir airport.
Roads were good esp main roads and generally not crowded at all. We got lost quite a few times on secondary roads, but no big deal.
Our TR has more info about the car rental and where we went. http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...ern-turkey.cfm
have fun!

We rented three years ago.
Price of gas was outrageous.
Toll roads need a special pass.
Incredible funny stories about dropping off cars. Try to stick to name brands.
Roads were pretty good, rarely got lost and had a car in two different regions.

I used gemut.com to make my arrangements. I told them where I wanted to pick up / drop off the rental, and they worked with me to make that possible.
The car I rented used gas; you could probably specify diesel if you want. You would, IMO, be wise to confirm before driving off. ;-)
I had an International Driving Permit, but don't remember ever being asked to show it.
More info on my trip report.

You'll find almost all global car rental companies at airport. Choose cheapest one. Choose a diesel car if u drive to much. Full coverage insurance may not cover all circumstances. You have to file an accident report with police, even if you have a small damage on the car. Also they may charge an extra cost in case of a big accident.
Anyway, rent a car is the best way to visit the Aegean coast. Just pay attention to insurance.
No need any special license.
