tulips in the Netherland
When is a good time to visit the Netherlands to see the tulips? What is the weather like at that time? What is the best way to enjoy them... canal cruise, drive, bike etc

It does not matter how you get to the Kuekenhof Gardens, I assume that is where you want to go.
Best time is about April 20th,, but NOT the Easter weekend.!
I was just there in April.

Generally late April/early May, but a lot depends on the winter and spring we have.
The weather can be anything from cold to damp to warm to sunny to raining, or even snow. No way of telling.
A visit to Keukenhof is what many people do. you can also rent bikes and ride around the fields, or take a car and go to the main bulb growing areas which are away from the touristy bit.

Here's a good way to visit the Keukenhof Flower Extravaganza, showcasing the wares of the Dutch horticultural business and also tiptoe thru the tulips - do as I have done a few times:
Take a train from Amsterdam to Haarlem and change to a train to Hillegom - a small station south of Haarlem which is just a few miles from the Keukenhof Park - and then walk along minor roads or tiptoe right thru the very heart of the tulip fields - and lots of other early blooms as well - from Keukenhof take a bus to the Leiden train station - shuttle buses depart all the time - and take the train back to Amsterdam.
The Keukenhof itself has few tulips but lots of hothouses with the star attractions - various flower producers sponsor them with a different and prolifici pungent pulchritudinous number of flowers, some rather exotic.
If you just go to the Keukenhof yes you can go outside its walls and tiptoe thru tulip fields adjacent to it - such on the northwest side.

there are various blooms in those flower fields around Hillegom throughout the summer - some as nice as a sea of undulating tulips - Keukenhof even opens occasionally later in the summer I think.

Yep hetismij2 is correct about the times at Kuekenhof.
My friend in Amsterdam who has worked at Kuekenhof says April 20th is best week to be there.
I was there for the week of April 20th this year.
It was a very nice warm day.
