Trying to plan 3 day hol, bergamo, villa balbianello and Milan

Jump to last reply

Hi, I've booked flight to milan from the uk - turns out its actually to Bergamo. Arrive 11am Friday 26th September, thinking do Bergamo that day as it sounds like a nice place to see.

The idea I'm positing at the moment, is book a hotel in Bergamo (the ones at Lake Como seem dear, but haven't tried all the towns like varenna or something, if there are cheap hotels maybe an idea, but at the mo, thinking maybe not want too much travelling as could be knackered from the journey from the UK).

Now here's where it seems to get tricky having just looked at your Lake como in one day thread and it was a lot bigger than I first realised. Was thinking direct train from Bergamo to Varenna, quick look around as it looks quite nice, and then head onto Bellagio. SO first questions, is it hour an half journey, and the best quickest option (cos there's always stoppnig at lecco as well).

After train from bergamo to varenna, is it possible to get a one price ferry that lets you stop off at bellagio for a look around before going onto Lenno for the Villa Balbianello, and then to Como for train to Milan.

So that's the general idea, is it doable ok in a day, I know its going to be a long day, not sure about how & when the tours are at the villa cos I would like to do one, but it will probably be late afternoon with this intinerary. ANd then the train to Milan from Como, I her there's two an express and non, guessing express is best, but also hear there's a nice view on the train back through the mountains, is this both of them or different routes.

SO this idea would give us Friday Bergamo, saturday Lake Como & Villa Balbianello then sunday Milan with the airbus back from milan sunday evening (assuming they run all the time) for a 22.35 flight back from Bergumo airport.

On paper it sounds a good way of seeing a lot to me, but am yet to book the hotels as is it the best option (is definitely the most varied journey) or am I better off spending two nights in milan, and then doing the lakes either sat or sun return from Milan (don't know how much cheaper this would be than my bergumo, lake Milan option), or doing sunday lake from milan then straight to bergamo airport from lake.

to clarify we are not bothered about shopping in Milan just having a look around, and hoping things would be open ok on a sunday and not cause too much bother - finding a cheap place to eat for instance (if such a thing exists)!
