My husband and I will be spending 4 nights in Colmar this fall. Does anyone have suggestions on where to stay? We are looking at Domaine Martin Jund, Hotel Saint-Martin, and Hostellerie Le Marechal, but we're open to other ideas.

What are you looking for, the restaurant, the rooms, the locality, the ambiance etc etc.

When I go I like to find a traditional French hotel with good cooking, so I use the logis de france website and look for "3 pots" symbol.

BTW I'd stay in a village not in Colmar, because I like staying near the vinyards but everyone wants different things.

of your three I'd drop the St Martin and then choose between little Venice or the centre of the old town.

Thank you for telling me about the logis de france site. We love food as well, so I will look at that for good restaurant options. We thought of staying in one of the little wine villages, but because we will not have a car, we feel Colmar would make a convenient home base and we plan to take bikes/buses/trains to the villages for day trips.

We're leaning towards the Petite Venice area because it looks to be an easy 15 min walk to/from the train station. But we also enjoy being close to pubs, cafes & restaurants...does the city centre have more to offer?

As far as the hotel itself, we would like something clean & comfortable in a great area. It doesn't need to be fancy as we never spend much time in our room.

Four nights in Colmar would be at least two nights too much for me. Is there a reason you don't want to stay in Strasbourg, where there is actually a whole lot happening all the time (and a very pretty town) and just take an easy train ride to Colmar?

But yes, Logis de France is always a good resource for nice hotels.

We will be staying in Strasbourg for 3 nights and would love hotel and neighborhood recommendations there as well. Do you have a favorite hotel or part of town? What are your thoughts on the Petite France area? We are thinking of 4 nights in Colmar and plan to do day trips to the wine villages at least 2 of those days. If we run out of things to do, we may even take a day train trip to Basel or somewhere within 2 hours of Colmar. But we haven't booked anything yet, so we could change our plans. We are flying in and out of Paris, and will spend 3 nights there too. We have been to Paris before, so 3 nights will be plenty.

I stayed in the Petite France area in Strasbourg and liked it a lot -- I still could walk to the main points of interest such as around the cathedral, and I even walked to/from the train station one day for a day trip elsewhere. I took a taxi from the train station to the hotel upon arrival due to luggage but that didn't cost much. I liked being a bit away from the hubbub right at the cathedral, to be honest, it was packed with tourists of course and noisy. There are some hotels right there but I personally wouldn't want to stay in them.

Loved my hotel, the Hotel de l'Europe. They had about the best buffet breakfast I've ever had in a hotel.

I believe I had a double deluxe as prices were so reasonable, I splurged.

Colmar centre is pretty nice just not massive. There is a bus system based from Colmar but it really means to provide transport from the boondocks to Colmar schools early in the morning and then home again in the afternoon.

Cycling is a good route, there is a hire place near the station and of course you can take them on the train and ride back. I'd prefer to stay in a small village but the hotels are smaller with fewer extras, but at least you can walk into the vinyards as the sun rises. I'm staying in Eguisheim in Sept for example, getting out of Colmar is a little tricky on a bike you must not ride on the dual carriage way, and it is certainly doable but I'd get a good local map.

Strasbourg, perfectly nice just not very close to the wine area.
