trip to malta and southern italy
Our son is in malta so we plan to be there October 29, 2005. Then we hope to spend 2 weeks in southern italy and/or sicily
We would appreciate suggestions on what to do, where to stay and whether it would be better to stay 2 places for 1 week each or jump around. We have travelled in N. Italy but not south of rome. Amalfi area sound interesting but it will be November. Thanks

If you haven't already done so, do separate keyword searches on Malta and Silicy - you'll find some detailed trip reports on both. Combining a week each in Malta and Silicy will give you a nice overview of both areas. History lovers will delight in Malta. Have fun researching!

I've never been to Malta, but I've been to Sicily several times. Two weeks is just right for a first trip visiting some of the highlights of Sicily. Novemeber is a pleasant time of year in Sicily--not the absolute MOST perfect time, but quite good, with mild weather (except in the Nebrodi Mts.) and the olive harvest in full swing.

I actually went to Malta and Sicily last august for my honey moon. We spend 7 days in Malta and then took a short flight to Catania.
We spend 3 days in Catania and then took a train to Naples. The first day we were in Catania, it was a catholic holday so everything was close - kind of sucked. We walked around everywhere and got to see a lot of decent stuff... nothing great. Everyone spoke italian... not much english.
The next day we took a day trip (by bus) to Syracuse... which was awesome. I highly recommend Syracuse. There are a ton of old greek and roman ruins (the best theater I've seen in italy) and catacomes.
The last day we planned to take a train from Catana to Taormina to Naples. We were going to get off in Taormina, check our bags at the station and explore the city... Unfortunatly there was no bag check, so we hung out in the train station until the next train to Naples came.
