Trip to Italy with teenagers

I have been to Italy before we had kids but never been to amalfi coast or pompeii So we are set on seeing rome again , pompeii, amalfi coast and possibly capri . We are flying in and out of rome -fares were cheaper. The kids would love venice also ( we were there before) but I'm not sure if the time it takes to travel there would be worth it . Our flight is aug 5 returning aug 19 .
When we fly into rome maybe we could buy ticket on same day to venice to avoid one extra train trip or transfers to air port .

One itinerary /
Arrive rome . Fly to venice stay three nights in venice
Train to rome . Then three nights in rome
Train to Naples . Get driver and guide to take us to pompeii and then to sorrento
Two nights in sorrento
Two nights in positano
Two nights in capri
Back to rome one night
Fly home
Or skip venice and spend more time on amalfi coast

Variation on your itinerary would be to put all your time in Rome at the end. For me, I would not enjoy changing location every two nights for Sorrento, Positano, and Capri.

Arrive Rome. Fly/train to Venice stay three nights in Venice
Train/fly to Naples and on to Sorrento.
Two nights in Sorrento - day trip by train to Pompeii
Two nights in Positano
Two nights in Capri
Train to Rome. Four nights in Rome
Fly home

I agree with ellenem about putting your time in Rome at the end. You get the long travel from Venice to Naples over with in one day rather than breaking up the travel and taking a big chunk out of two days.

How much more would it cost to fly into Venice vs. the price of the flight from Rome to Venice? Is it really much of a savings? I realize that prices vary by origin location and carrier but I just did a search from my home airport on your travel dates and the fare to fly into Venice and home from Rome was only $5 more expensive.

It seems that you've already bought your tickets but it's something to check for the next trip.

Have u taken the train from venice to Naples ? It seemed like a long trip. That's why I put rome in between but it does add one more train trip.

Still wondering if u think we should include venice ?

Also To avoid so many hotel changes at the end we could stay more nights in positano and see capri as day trip.

Also if we went from venice all the way to Naples it would be too late to tour pompeii on that day . But we could continue to sorrento from Naples and see pompeii as a side trip from sorrento the next day . I don't want to stay overnight in Naples . Is that correct or are u back tracking too much ?

I would never suggest omitting Venice from a trip to Italy, especially if you have kids. It's the perfect place to get over jet lag and gently introduce them to Italian ways.

If you got an early train from Venice, you'd arrive in Naples in the early afternoon. Pompeii is only about a half hour's drive so you'd still have several hours to see it. Pompeii stays open until 7:30 in the summer.

Otherwise it is an easy trip on the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Pompeii. That commuter train will also take you from Naples Centrale station to Sorrento. (You catch it downstairs in the Centrale station.)

I too am bothered by your 3 different stops in the AC area. Maybe skip Sorrento, spend 4 nights in Positano, 2 nights on Capri. Or 3 + 3. Get your driver to take you all the way to Positano.

I definitely agree to put your time in Rome at the end, to maximize your vacation time.

Another thought is to change your tickets into Venice out of Naples. Then Rome in the middle makes more sense.

I would not chance flying to Venice upon arrival. What if your overseas flight is delayed?

Why not take the train to Naples/Sorrento upon arrival since it is a shorter ride?

Arr Rome, train to Naples, transfer to Sorrento. Do Pompeii as a day trip from Sorrento. I would also do Capri as a day trip if you are planning to stay later on the Amalfi (Positano). Fly to Venice if you want to keep it in your itinerary, then train to Rome.

I got tickets last year on Easy Jet for $72. Short pleasant flight.

All of these destinations will be hot and busy in August. It might ease the hot and hectic feeling if you eliminated Venice and added days to Rome or the coast. Your choice.

What time does your flight arrive in Rome? There used to be a bus from the airport to Salerno (a bit south of Amalfi/Positano). From there you could take a ferry (depending on time of year) or Sita bus to Amalfi/Positano.

I agree with putting all of Rome at the end. It wastes time to stay in a city multiple times (getting to and from transport to the hotel/checking in and out of hotels).

I agree with the advice above. I think it makes more sense to do Naples/Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast FIRST, then fly Naples-Venice, train Venice-Rome.

With six days near or on the Amalfi Coast, you might pick two destinations to give you a feel for the area. Sorrento has the best transportation options to Pompeii and Capri, and is also a relatively flat town, so easy to navigate. But it is a medium sized city, and not as charming or beautiful as Positano.

Positano is a city of stairs, all about the gorgeous views, and stunning vistas. Some of the best food we've had on the Amalfi Coast has been in Positano. But like other towns on the coast, it can be insanely crowded in the summer months, especially during August when most of Europe is on vacation.

Whatever you decide, you need to do it quickly and contact some hotels to see what's available. Some of the more popular hotels get booked a year ahead in the summer months, particularly August.

Good luck!

Don't skip the most awesomely gorgeous unique city in the world for anything else in Italy - you kids will always remember Venice - more than an Amalfi Coast a bit too dull in many ways for them.
