Planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast, 4 nights and then off to Lake Como area for 5 nights. I plan to fly in to Naples, and then back to Naples to fly home (Georgia, Atlanta). I have my hotels booked, and a rental car. Question: Amalfi first and then Lake Como or the reverse? And, is a rental car necessary or even recommended, all things considered?

I personally am not comfortable driving in Amalfi and preferred walking because of the amazing views. Or the SITA is very accessible, so no need to drive. IMO, I'd go to Lake Como first, end in Amalfi. Amalfi is closer to Naples and I like to be close to my return airport the night before. And since you will have a car, you can use it to go up to Lake Como, then drop it in Naples before you go to Amalfi. Have fun!
If you plan to go to Lake Como, why not fly into MIlan, visit Lake Como, travel to Naples/Amalfi Coast, fly home from Naples? It will save traveling back to Naples and should cost about the same. Check prices using the "multi-city" option on airline websites (Atlanta-Milan, Naples Atlanta).
It makes no sense to hed back to Naples. Depending on time of year you should do either north or south first. For south use Naples airport and for Como use Milan.
Flying open jaws should not cost any more - just make sure you look at multi-destination flits and not 2 one-way flights.
Car or not depends on your confidence/enjoyment of driving - and if you will b at Amalfi in the height of season - when driving the coast road is torture due to the incredible traffic. We have used a car there a couple of times and loved it - but it was May and not August.
If you don;t use a car take bus to Sorrento and then train from there to Naples and Naples north.
Thank you, all of you! I learned some new things here. Great advice!
