Trip to Central France Aug 2013

Jump to last reply

My family (2 adults, 2 kids ages 12 and 10) are visiting France from Aug 9-20 (10 full days). We are interested in seeing the history, pre-history and natural beauty of the country. We have selected 3 areas to explore: Paris, Loire Valley and Dordogne. We want to do a fair amount of biking, especially along the Loire River (Chateaux-a-Velo routes), stopping off at the famous chateaux, exploring small villages, etc.

We have started sketching out a rough itinerary as follows:

Day 1: Arrive Paris 1.10pm. Explore central Paris.
Day 2: Explore Paris. Evening train to Blois via Orleans (~2 hours)
Day 3-4: Biking on Chateaux-a-Velo Itineraries, including visiting Chambord
Day 4 eve: catch train/bus from Blois to Chinon
Day 5: Bike route from Chinon to Villandry, visiting Chateau Azay-le-Rideau, Villandry Gardens, etc
Day 6: Chinon to Montsoreau, visiting Fontevraud-l’Abbaye.
Day 6 eve/ Day 7 morn: rent car and drive Chinon to Perigueux (3hr25)
Day 7-10: explore Dordogne area, seeing the following:
- Perigueux (Roman ruins)
- Grotte de Font de Gaume in Vezere Valley
- Grotte de Lascaux in Vezere Valley
- La Roque Saint Christophe in Vezere Valley
- Domme and Rocamadour in Lot area.

Day 11: to fill in. Evening return to Paris
Day 12: morning departure.

Some questions:
- Would appreciate views on the itinerary
- Would you recommend other places either in addition or instead of what we are doing?
- How easy is it to get from Blois to Chinon
- Can we rent a car easily in Chinon and is a 1-way rental possible?
