I will be traveling to Vienna in late October for a conference. I would like to take a week or so after the conference to visit other places in Austria - maybe Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz. What cities would you suggest? And do you think it is possible to travel by train? Everything I have read so far suggests that renting a car would be best to see the scenery. Any recommendations would be most welcome!

Hi cls,

Were I in Vienna in October, I would train to Salzburg for 3 nights and then to Munich for 3 nights and fly home from there.
Enjoy your visit.
Hallstaat for a night or two?
Have you been to Vienna before and see all the major sights? Or is this conference only part of the day? Vienna is worth at least 3 days by itself. After that Salzburg is worth 2 day sand then you need a couple of days in the mountains (you can see a little be train through them but to really explore a car is much better).
Thanks very much, ira and joannyc. nytraveler, I have not been to Vienna before. And the conference will be going on all day for five days (Monday through Friday). I don't think I will be able to do any sightseeing in Vienna until the conference is over. I figured that I would want to stay in Vienna after the conference to see the sights, so it is good to know that 3 days will be sufficient to see the major sights.
Another thought, after 3 days in Vienna why not follow up the old Empire and visit either Budapest or Prague. Train is ok, though I might travel ist class (well I wouldn't bother but it does not cost a lot) and 3 or 4 days in either would be good. Prague has some fine buildings, beer and food, while Budapest has great spas (seriously great spas) food and wine.
Thanks, bilboburgler. I have been to Prague, so I would consider Budapest first. Thanks for your thoughts on this.
