Trip to Amsterdam - advice needed

Last year we went to Glasgow to celebrate my birthday, this year we plan to go to Amsterdam. I had some great advice on fodors about districts, restaurants etc for Glasgow, so I hope to find the same again this year.

We will probably be around 10-15. We would like to stay in a central hotel, close to a district that has some great restaurants, good bars and perhaps some late night bars too.

I have never been to Amsterdam, so know nothing about it, apart from that we are not going for the Cafes. And I have heard it is a very beautiful city.

If anyone has been recently and can recommend a good restaurant, great hotel with a pool (4* would be good) and a nice district to stay in it would be appreciated.

We are not looking for a cheap weekend, so a nice restaurant would be perfect. Same for the hotel.

I am also researching this on the internet.

Thanks in advance.

Nice and 4 star help -- but we really need your actual budget. Are you talking about 5 - 7 double rooms? A bunch of singles?

We were in Amsterdam in August. We had a great dinner at Lucius in the center of Amsterdam. Great seafood, atmosphere and service. Would highly recommend the restaurant and food. We did not stay in hotel in Amsterdam, so can't recommend any. Lots to do. Nice musuems, canal rides are fun. We took the blue boat canal rides and they were not as crowded as those near the Railroad station. Link for restaurant: http://www.lucius.nl/

Hi and thanks for the replies. Not really thought about budget, more interested in quality. I guess the ceiling per night is around 300 euros per room, though not all of us can afford that, so I will also look for a hotel close to the one I choose that is a bit cheaper.

For the restaurant about 6O - 100 euros per head including wine should be fine.

Thanks!

I can recommend two bars.

't Arendsnest
Herengracht 90
They specialize in all and only the Holland breweries.

Gollem
Raamsteeg 4
They specialize in Belgiums and other great beers.

Both pubs offer great beers and very knowledgable staff, if you want great beers and a taste of Holland don't miss them

The Pulitzer is a great Hotel in the same area of these great pubs. On the expensive side but it is very nice. Stayed there a few years ago on a winners trip so it wasn't my dime, but very nice.

All these places are in or near the Jordan area which is very nice.

Have fun, wish I was going!

Would like to second the nomination of Hotel Pulitzer and also suggest Hotel Ambassade Herengracht 341. You might check out Room 97. A suite on the top floor looking out onto the Singel (Canal). A small, unpretentious but very good rest. is Villa Zeezich, Torenstag, 7. A few bits up the scale is Zuid Zeeland on Herengracht. Also Long Pura is good for "Indonesian rice table" not too far from the Pulitzer.

You could also choose to go to a bed and breakfast because they are much cheaper than an averege hotel accommoation. www.weekendhotels.nl offers them all with online availability.
Good reviews by cunsumers on eating (all kind of budgets and kitchen) can be found at www.iens.nl
Enjoy your stay!
