Good experiences with a hotel, restaurant, and chocolate maker/cafe from a trip to Riga in April 2007:
Grand Palace Hotel, Pils iela 12, 371.6704.4000 http://www.grandpalaceriga.com
-wonderful hotel in the old town, great location, rooms were comfortable and well-equipped, some minor wear-and-tear in places, but, in general, quite comfortable, level of service provided by staff was absolutely top-notch--I do not often stay at this class of accommodation, but the friendly and competent service I received from the moment my taxi pulled up to the entrance is what I would expect and made staying there such a pleasure, breakfast buffet was excellent: particularly great coffee, pastries, and particularly fresh fish dishes, room service was astounding in quality, yet the prices were not the normally ridiculous level I associate with room service, excellent place for a splurge with top-notch service and wonderful quality all-around, would love to try the restaurant associated with the hotel as everything else was so superb
Restorāns Pie Kristapa Kunga, Baznīcas iela 27/29, 7294898 http://www.piekristapa.lv
-fun restaurant with traditional Latvian fare, great ambience—somewhat of a folklore approach, casual but lots of fun and friendly service, big tables, everything is decorated, great place for big groups of people, the food is really good quality, some of the best herring I have ever had, but watch our for the portions—an appetizer is larger than an entire meal in many places, delicious food and great chance to sample wonderful Latvian seafood, incredibly filling experience
Emīla Gustava Šokolāde, 83/85 Elizabetes iela, http://www.sokolade.lv/
-great little café/chocolate shop, wonderful classy décor (don’t miss the bathroom, it is super nice too!), a cup of hot chocolate is literally that—hot melted chocolate in an espresso cup!, perfect on a cold day, the variety of chocolates is of incredible quality, certainly something I always would want to bring back with me, chocolate worth seeking out, on par with the best (you'll likely see other branches--including a convenient one at Riga airport, but this was my favorite place to hang out)

Funny you should post about the very same chocolate shop where my friends and I had luscious hot chocolate exactly one year earlier in April, 2006!
Riga and Tallinn are two of my favorite towns in the world. Hope to go back to the Baltics soon.
