Trip Report 14th-17th October
This was our 2nd visit to Iceland. In July 2012 we covered the ring road and landmanalaugar. Wanted to visit westfjord but the advise was mid October may not be ideal due to road condition.
Reached Keflavik at 3pm, picked up car from Hertz(used them earlier). Drove to hotel skogafoss . Weather was clear and very strong NL show all night.
15th morning left for Skaftafell for the ice cave tour at noon with extreme Iceland. More of a glacier hike as the cave is a small tunnel. Next visit will plan visiting Crystal cave as it opens later in Nov.
After the tour drove to Jokulsarlon to see the sunset at Diamond beach. Lots of ice blocks on the beach. Stayed night at Hali. Very nice hotel with excellent breakfast.
16th morning visited Jokulsarlon for the sunrise. Then went to the smaller lagoon Fjallsarlon. It's quite pretty with few people. Stopped at Fjaðrárgljúfur. Very nice canyon. Later in the evening went to the black sand beach. Very crowded at the basalt columns. Lovely sunset at the beach and then checked in at Iceland air hotel.
17th morning drove to Sejlandfoss and stopped along other waterfalls on the way. In the afternoon drove to Haifoss and Jalparfoss. Beautiful drive with the fall colors at Gjain and Haifoss was one of the best falls we have seen. The road to falls was full of holes and rocks. Fortunately we had a car with high clearance.
In the evening returned to keflavik for our flight back on 18th morning.
We got lovely weather but what surprised me was that this late in the season the crowds in some of the places was way more that what we encountered in summer of 2012
