Trip from Italy to Spain itinerary Aug 2016
Hello all !
i have read some of the topics posted and have found some great help however its a bit outdated,
Looking to get some assistance for a trip we are doing as a Family (6 Adults). We are arriving into Rome on the 27th of August. Cities we would like to for sure see would be Barcelona, Madrid, Another city in Spain. We are hoping to be done all this by Sep 07 because thats the day we will need to fly over Paris for our last departure.
We don't know what the best way about this would be. To drive up the coast ? fly in between cities, take the train ! any assistance would be greatly appreciated !
thanks

Sorry -- You only have 10.5 days available and Rome, three cities in Spain and Paris are on your itinerary. You will eat up a full 2 days just in transit between places -- so you are trying to hit 5 cities and only have a little over 8 days free. Not really doable.
(If you want to visit Spain why are you flying into Rome?)

Are you spending any time in Rome or Paris?
Have you thought about how much time travel will take? At least a half day from hotel to airport, flight time, airport to hotel each time you move.
If you are not spending time in Rome and Paris, why go in and out of those cities? Fly into Spain instead.
If you are spending time in Rome and Paris, you do not have enough time for other cities.
Have you already purchased flights?
August 27, Arrive Rome, 1/2 jet lagged day, mostly walking
August 28 & 29, Rome
August 30, fly to Madrid, 1/2 day for sight seeing
August 31, Madrid
September 1, day trip to Toledo
September 2, Fast train to Barcelona 1/2 day sightseeing
September 3 & 4, Barcelona
September 5, fly to Paris, 1/2 day sight seeing
September 6, Paris.
September 7, fly home
One day is not enough time for Paris. You could cut a day from Barcelona and add it to Paris.
Better would be to cut one city entirely.
Best would be to do Rome and Paris with a day trip from each, or
Madrid & Barcelona, with Seville or Granada or some other city in Spain, or
Madrid, Barcelona and Paris, or
Rome, Barcelona and Madrid.

Driving along the coast would be absolute insanity at that time of year and given your time constraints and the fact that a one-way rental could cost you a fortune.
Trains would be cumbersome and time consuming, and you're very short on time.
Flying seems to me to be your only option, but even that isn't ideal considering the time lost getting to and from, and waiting at, airports.
I'll echo janisj - why are you flying into Rome and leaving from Paris if the idea is to visit Spain? I hope it wasn't to save money, because I really doubt you will.

Suggest you do majestic Madrid and medieval and modernistic Barcelona, two fabulous and very diffenerent cities. And you go from city center to city center with the very comfortable high speed AVE train in 2h 30mins. Buy tickets online in advance and save up to 50% (renfe.com).
Great intro to Barcelona: http://www.barcelonaturisme.com/wv3/en/

Thank you all so much for your replies !!
I guess I had to highlight that we have already bought tickets flying into Rome and out of Paris. I should also be really exact on my dates.
I will arrive into Rome on the 27th at midday. My flight leaves out of Paris back home on Saturday 10 midday as well.
So after reading all replies I have talked to my family and decided to discard the option of driving.
Now we have to figure our Inter Europe trip. I had put Spain in there because it was a common place the 6 of us wanted to visit.
Based on your experience what cities would you suggest in Spain and routes ?
I noticed Sevilla was mentioned I have heard great things about it.
Also should I be visiting any other cities in Italy that would somehow play along with what we have in mind?
Thank you all again this has been great help !

"Based on your experience what cities would you suggest in Spain and routes?"
Our experience can help if you say what your interests are.
"Also, should I be visiting any other cities in Italy that would somehow play along with what we [have in mind]?" Tons of wonderful cities in Italy, but it is not at all clear what you "have in mind" with regards to interests and sightseeing.
Six adults. Interested in architecture, churches, museums, art, history, food, culture, landscape, hiking, major tourists attractions, small towns and villages, larger cities?
There are too many things and places to recommend without knowing what you are interested in.

Still a bit confused if you all wanted to visit Spain why are you flying in to Rome and home from Paris?
Logistics are not in your favor.
You have 28 Aug (day 1 will mostly be a wash out since you don't land til mid day and at least some of you will be jet lagged) through 9 Sept (your last day will be devoted to flying home). So just 13 useable days, and a party of six.
Since Rome and Paris are fixed -- I would just do a couple (3 max) of cities in Italy, and Paris. Remember -- 6 traveling together -- everything will take longer than a solo traveler or couple.

In Spain in August, I suggest you do at least one city along the coast because of the summer heat.
Above I suggested Barcelona and Madrid, very doable, fast transfer with the AVE train etc. But if you want to go South to Andalucía, you can go from Madrid to genuine Málaga city (3000 years old Malaka) by the Med, also only in 2h 30 mins city center to city center with AVE. My favourite city in the region after many years of travel here, much for the laid-back atmosphere and the back-streets, but also for the vibrant nightlife and culture scene.
